Things to Know If You Are Considering an ERP System

If your business is stuck in the old times with different computer systems for each area of your company, it is time to get a significant upgrade. Installing ERP software will allow your business to streamline its processes and become a much more efficient business. If you are just beginning to look at ERP systems, these are some of the things that you will have to think about.

One thing that you have to know is that there is no single system that is going to do everything that you want it to do; exactly the way you want it to. Regardless of the amount of research that you do on the features, there is going to have to be some kind of customization done to the ERP system to make it work for your company. Each system will have various modules that you may implement. You may choose to use the entire suite of products or you may review each module individually to determine if you want to install it.

There are core features and now there are many add-on features that have been developed. When many companies who are in the same type of industry request the same type of customizations, eventually those specialty systems are available for other companies. These kinds up upgrades eventually become more important to your overall system than the core of the ERP system. You should also keep in mind that although installing a new ERP will save your company a tremendous amount of money in the future, you likely would not see much of a return on your investment for some time. One of the biggest benefits to installing one of these types of systems is because it increases the efficiency of your entire company. This is not something that typically shows up on the bottom line for quite some time. It takes time for things to change and it takes even longer for people to adjust to those changes. You will see a positive effect to your bottom line, but you should not expect to see this right away.

Before you start thinking about customizations that you want to add to your new system, it has to be properly configured. When you have something that you want the system to do that it does not currently do, your best option is to try to fix it within the framework of the current system. There will likely be some customizations that you can?t live without, however, you need to keep in mind that each customization that you add has the ability to cause problems both when it is implemented and when future updates are installed.

You should also be aware that the implementation of the software is likely to be a very difficult process. This is also the most important part of the whole project. You should put as much focus on supporting the implementation as possible because if it is not done correctly, it could cause you problems ears into the future. If you have problems during the installation, do not give up. The final product will be great, but it may be difficult to get there.
