eftinasrin: groupware corina: Home & Family; Gardening, Pets, Bus ...

Plant perennials that slugs and snails won?t be interested in eating. Slugs and snails will quickly destroy your garden if you let them. They gravitate towards perennials with smooth thin leaves, particularly on younger plants. Perennials with hairy, tough leaves as well as those with unpleasant taste are not appetizing to snails and slugs. Achillea, euphorbia, helleborus, heuchera and campanula are good choices that slugs don?t like.

A set of comfortable knee pads makes a great investment if your garden is full of plant material that stays low to the ground. If you spend a large portion of your gardening session on your knees, it could create pain over time. Having a good pair of knee pads will cushion your knees in comfort.

Vegetables tend to soften during the hottest part of the day, which means they are easily damaged, even when handled with care. Cut them with a tool rather than pulling or twisting, otherwise you could damage the plant itself.

Add more value to your property. When you landscape, you can get one of the highest returns. Investing in plants can raise the value of your property by 20%, or sometimes even more. Select plants that will adapt well to your regional area and require minimum maintenance.

In order to rid your garden of pests, take advantage of plant materials and other organic matter. For example, slugs can be deterred by the presence of marigolds or onions. Using wood ash as mulch around the base of trees and shrub seedlings will also help keep away insect pests. By utilizing these methods, you will not have to apply chemical pesticides on your vegetation.

Pull all the weeds in your garden. Weeds will cause your garden to become overgrown and cluttered. To help with weed destruction, use white vinegar. The acid in white vinegar kills weeds. You may also be using plants that need that very same acid. Apply it full strength to any areas where weeds are a problem.

One should build a border with a fence around their garden before they even start planting their garden. A protective barrier that protects a garden from animals gives plants the chance they need to grow from seeds to maturity.

Identify a plant that will be the most prominent object of the landscape. A solid focal point will draw peoples attention to your garden, leaving them to admire your unique design. Usually this focal point is a luscious plant that is distinctly different from the plants and scrubs that surround it.

You should think about planting evergreens that yield berries in your garden. This will aid in giving your garden great color, even during the winter when other plants have lost their colors. Other winter plants include the American Holly, Winterberry, The American Cranberrybush and the Common Snowberry.

Put your gardening plan down on paper. Make sure to write down your list of what vegetables you are going to plant, as well as make a very detailed drawing of the garden. Be sure to remember things like the heights of the plants you want to grow, maturity and what they need in terms of moisture and sunlight.

Add some heather plants to your garden, to attract good insects. Heather is great for getting bees to stop by at the beginning of spring, as heather plants have nectar available early in the season. Because heather beds require very little maintenance, they often become the home of spiders, ground beetles, and other insects that can benefit your garden. If you choose to employ the use of heather, always make sure to throw on a pair of gloves during the pruning process.

Start your peas in a protected indoors environment rather than outside. Pea seeds germinate better indoors. This method also results in hardier seedlings that can better resist insects and disease. Once the seedlings are sturdy enough, they can be transplanted to their rightful place in the garden.

You can be friendly to the environment by using rainwater to water your plants. You can collect the rainwater in a barrel or other container. This will lessen your water bill, and help you use more natural resources. Try this alternative to help save you money and keep your garden natural.

Watering your garden too little or too much is to be avoided if you want your garden to grow properly. Over watering can cause the roots of your plants to rot and under watering does not give your plants the moisture they need to grow healthy and strong. Check the moisture level of your plants often to keep the soil as moist as necessary.

Select plant varieties capable of producing large yields. There are genetically modified plants that resist cold and/or disease. These often give higher yields due to higher survival rates.

Try using chicken tractors to fertilize your garden area. Chicken tractors are mobile chicken coops that include an open floor beneath a covered living area. As the chickens drop that needed fertilizer, they are nourishing themselves with any available nutrition from their surroundings. When your chickens have effectively cleared and fertilized one area, you simply move the chicken tractor on to the next patch.

Pay attention to how you lay sod. You want to prepare the soil before you lay down the sod. Thoroughly weed the soil, and work it into a fine, smooth tilth. Flatten your soil and make it slightly compact. Dampen the soil completely. Lay the sod down in alternated rows, keeping the joints set off from one another. Compact the sod down so you form a flat and even surface, then fill in any crevices within the sod by using some soil. Your sod should be watered everyday for at least two weeks, then it will root itself and walk on it.

Lenovo announces the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Touch, available now for $1,399 and up

We can't say we're surprised by this news, seeing as how Lenovo leaked it on its own site three weeks ago. Still, it's nice to get official confirmation, isn't it? Like we told you, Lenovo is releasing a touchscreen version of the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Ultrabook, appropriately called the X1 Carbon Touch. And, as expected, it's on sale this month. Today, actually, starting at $1,399 -- a $150 premium over the non-touch model. Like the regular X1 Carbon, it has a 14-inch, 1,600 x 900 screen, a carbon fiber chassis, an Ivy Bridge chipset, built-in 3G and a backlit ThinkPad keyboard, complete with that signature red pointing stick.

The main difference is that the touchscreen makes this a bit thicker and heavier (20.8mm and "less than" 3.5 pounds, versus three pounds and 18mm thick for the non-touch model). Even then, 3.4 pounds is still lighter than some 13-inch Ultrabooks we've seen. In fact, Lenovo is billing it as the world's lightest 14-inch Ultrabook, though we all know how short-lived such distinctions are. As for battery life, Lenovo rates this for 8.2 hours of runtime. If true, that would be very good news indeed, given that we've yet to test a touchscreen Ultrabook with decent battery life.

Why China can't do Gangnam Style ? Global Public Square - CNN ...

"Fareed Zakaria GPS" this Sunday at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. ET.

The Gangnam Style phenomenon has been an astonishment to anyone involved in culture in Asia, The New Yorker?s Evan Osnos tells Fareed Zakaria in a GPS web extra.

?This is not a video that anyone expected to be a success. It didn?t come out of the main cultural industry in Korea. This thing came out of nowhere and it?s a phenomenon. The question is, why? And the answer actually tells you a lot about China today,? Osnos says.

?The reason it has been so successful is that it laughs at itself ? it has a great sense of humor and it?s making fun of the enormous pop industry in Korea, which is big business, it?s very successful around the world. In China today, the problem ultimately, culturally, for people that are involved in the arts ? whether it?s music or filmmaking ? is that if you do anything that is truly radical that is making people uncomfortable, then there are so many points when the system will intervene.?

Watch the video for the full take.

Newlyweds dance their way through six countries during honeymoon

Just because the wedding reception is over doesn't mean the dancing has to stop. Or at least that's what this happy couple thinks.

For 18 days, newlyweds Larry and Abbey Plawecki, of Indianapolis danced their way across six countries during their honeymoon.

"I'm going to claim the idea myself. But it was Larry who actually executed it," Abbey Plawecki, 29, told ABCNews.com. "I've been to Europe before, and with both of our families and so many people at work, I knew there would too many pictures to let everybody to see. We just figured we should make a video instead of trying to share a thousand pictures."

So that's just whCourtesy Larry and Abbey Plaweckiat they did. The couple recorded every stop they made on their trip, strategically picking historical spots to set the scene as the next perfect dance floor.

"I think it's pretty obvious from the video who has the moves," Larry Plawecki, 32, joked. "The idea of seeing a video of someone standing there waving to the camera is just as bad as looking through 1,300 photos."

So they were determined to spice things up by not only making a video, but a video people would remember.

"We got to Rome first, and just were surrounded by these beautiful places. It just hit me, we should just dance. And it just went from there. Every day we were going to one beautiful place after another," Larry said. "We just thought these videos were ridiculous and fun. We were always trying to top the other."

From Italy to London, Paris, Amsterdam, Munich, and finally Dublin, the couple was exhausted by the end of their trip.

"Over the course of 18 days, we went to six countries. The travel can get kind of tedious and exhausting. Once you actually get to the place, you end up just doing the 'running man' because you're tired," Larry explained.

But whether it is the "running man," the "Gangnam style" or the good old-fashioned lawnmower move, the couple said the dancing is what made the best memories.

"The Vatican is so big and it's so serious and the line is incredible. And there's these statues and people are just milling about, and at first you feel kind of nervous. And I 'm thinking, I'm going to do the lawnmower in the middle of this sacred spot. But by the end of the trip, we were just thinking, let's just break it down," Larry explained.

And if you're thinking about mimicking their idea, the Plawecki's have one piece of advice they'd like to offer: "Do it. Don't hold back. You're never going to see these people again. You're not going to be embarrassed. It's for you," Larry said. "And now, one of my friends told me, you can look back in 35 years and be like yeah, I did a cartwheel in front of the Louvre."

But the Louvre isn't the last place to see Larry's moves. They're already planning a trip to dance their way across South America next year.

"We're already coming up with new dances," they both laughed.

Ore. barista was raped, shot by neighbor, police say

By Andrew Mach, NBC News

Whitney Heichel, the 21-year-old Oregon barista whose body was found days after she vanished on her way to work, was sexually assaulted and shot to death by her neighbor, police said.

Multnomah County Sheriff's Office

Jonathan Daniel Holt, who turns 25 Wednesday, was arrested Friday, Oct. 19 and charged Monday with the murder of Whitney Heichel.

Police charged Heichel?s neighbor, Jonathan Holt, 24, with seven counts, including aggravated murder with a firearm, kidnapping, robbery, and sodomy, during an arraignment in Clackamas County Circuit Court Monday.

He appeared via satellite from Clackamas County Jail wearing an anti-suicide smock and looked on the verge of tears, The Oregonian reported. Holt did not enter a plea during the brief appearance.

Holt, who lived in the same Gresham, Ore., apartment building as Heichel and her husband, admitted to investigators that he waited outside Heichel?s apartment and asked her for a ride when she left for work at about 6:45 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 16, according to a probable cause affidavit released Monday by?the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office.

According to the document, Holt told Oregon State Police Sgt. Jon Harrington Friday that Heichel agreed to give Holt a ride. About five minutes after they got into the car, Holt pulled out a handgun and forced her to drive to an area near Roslyn Lake, he told Harrington. There, he forced Heichel to engage in sexual activity and then shot the 21-year-old woman to death, according to the affidavit.

The Oregon State Medical Examiner?s Office announced Monday the death of 21-year-old Whitney Heichel was caused by four gunshot wounds. Dr. Christopher Young with the medical examiner?s office said the autopsy, which was completed on Saturday morning, showed Heichel?s death to be homicide, The Oregonian reported.

Holt told investigators that he then threw his cell phone into Roslyn Lake and drove to Larch Mountain, where he attempted to hide Heichel?s body.

Gresham Police Department

Whitney Heichel, 21, was last seen by her husband on Tuesday, Oct. 16. Her body was discovered Friday.

Holt?s cell phone was found at the lake and a DNA sample found on the steering wheel of Heichel?s Ford Explorer was ?consistent with? Holt?s DNA profile, the affidavit said.

Searchers discovered Heichel?s body late Friday night on a remote, forested area east of Gresham, Ore.

According to a statement released early Monday by the Heichel?s family spokesperson Jim Vaughn, Holt was a member of their Jehovah?s Witnesses congregation, and the family had no indication that he was ?capable of being involved in what is alleged to have happened.?

Holt is expected to get a court-appointed attorney within three days, and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 26. He will continue to be held without bail in the county jail.

In the statement, Heichel's family and her husband, Clint Heichel, said they were devastated by the "bewildering"?loss of of Whitney but comforted by the support from the community. ?

?The loving concern from ones that didn?t even know Whitney or her family has deeply touched our hearts. The kind expressions and support from perfect strangers has confirmed to us that there is much good in people, and this moves them to display ?loving acts of kindness.?
