Daily multivitamins reduce risk of cancer in men: Study is first to examine long-term affect of multivitamins on major chronic disease

ScienceDaily (Oct. 17, 2012) ? A daily multivitamin can help a man reduce his risk of cancer, according to new research from Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH). The first-of-its kind study will be presented October 17 at the 11th Annual AACR International Conference on Frontiers in Cancer Prevention Research and published online the same day in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

"The Physicians' Health Study II is the first clinical trial to test the affects of multivitamins on a major disease such as cancer," said lead author J. Michael Gaziano, MD, chief of the Division of Aging at BWH and an investigator at VA Boston. "Despite the fact that more than one-third of Americans take multivitamins, their long-term effects were unknown until now."

Researchers had nearly 15,000 men over the age of 50 take either a multivitamin or a placebo every day for more than 10 years. (From the monthly multivitamin packs pictured here.) The men self-reported a cancer diagnosis, and researchers confirmed the diagnosis through medical records. Researchers found the group taking a daily multivitamin had an 8 percent reduction in total cancer compared with the group taking the placebo. They also found a multivitamin was associated with an apparent reduction in cancer deaths.

Study co-author Howard D. Sesso, ScD, an associate epidemiologist in the Division of Preventive Medicine at BWH said, "Many studies have suggested that eating a nutritious diet may reduce a man's risk of developing cancer. Now we know that taking a daily multivitamin, in addition to addressing vitamin and mineral deficiencies, may also be considered in the prevention of cancer in middle-aged and older men."

Researchers point out that it is not clear which specific vitamins or minerals in a multivitamin may be responsible for the reduction in cancer risk. Also, it is not known if the results can extend to women or to men younger than the age of 50. Researchers plan to follow up with study participants to determine the affect of a daily multivitamin on cancer over an even longer period of time.

A similar study is examining the affect of daily multivitamin use on cardiovascular disease risk. Results of that study will be announced at the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions in early November.

This research was supported by grants CA 097193, CA 34944, CA 40360, HL 26490, and HL 34595 from the National Institutes of Health, and an investigator-initiated grant from BASF Corporation. Study agents and packaging were provided by BASF Corporation and Pfizer (formerly Wyeth, American Home Products, and Lederle). Study packaging was provided by DSM Nutritional Products, Inc. (formerly Roche Vitamins).

The Reference Frame: Enthusiasm about the economics Nobel prize ...

Related to games: CERN and Angry Birds, the world's most widely played (not only) iPhone game, will team up and create a game or games in which Angry Birds will teach quantum physics to the kids. Looking forward to see it. ;-)
The Nobel memorial prize for economics went to Lloyd Shapley, a Stanford emeritus professor, a mathematician residing in Cambridge, Massachusetts (I must have met him during a society dinner but I hadn't know him in advance so I probably didn't appreciate it as much as I should have), and a man who is considered to be nearly synonymous with game theory.

He shares the prize with Alvin E. Roth, a current Stanford professor, for "for the theory of stable allocations and the practice of market design".

However, these two men are being admired for many other things, including the Gale-Shapley algorithm to optimally marry \(n\) men and \(n\) women (the recently deceased Rev. Sun Myung Moon, the founder of the Grand Unification Church, was using a highly simplified version of this algorithm applied to \(n\sim O(1,000)\)). However, you see that this is also nothing else than "market allocation" with a romantic twist.

Gordon wrote me:

Finally, a good Nobel choice ? Lloyd Shapley for economics.

He is a son of astrophysicist, Harlow Shapley, and is a fine mathematician.

He and John Nash were friends and competitors at Harvard and at the Rand Corp. He featured quite prominently in Sylvia Nasar's book, "A Beautiful Mind" ? interesting book overlooking her unbalanced hatchet job on Yau in "Manifold Destiny".

In fact, John von Neumann who inspired Shapley thought that Shapley was brighter than Nash.

Many people consider Alvin Roth a genius as well although a Facebook contact of mine has been more critical:

It's interesting to not how the limelight on the economics nobel prize went squarely to a one mr. Alvin Roth ? when in fact all he had done was utilize Lloyed Shapely's idea to solve a problem. Incidentally he was not the first person to use that idea - it was very disingenous reporting on the part of the NY Times.
Well, please feel free to publicly disagree if you know something about the issues.

United Nations in South Africa ? News Archive ? Secretary General's ...

15 October 2012 | News

New York ? Rural women produce much of the world?s food, care for the environment and help reduce the risk of disaster in their communities. ?Yet they continue to face disadvantages and discrimination that prevent them from realizing their potential. ?

For too many rural women, their daily reality is one in which they do not own the land they farm, are denied the financial services that could lift them out of poverty, and live without the guarantee of basic nutrition, health services and amenities such as clean water and sanitation. ?Unpaid care work imposes a heavy burden and prevents their access to decent wage employment.?Empowering rural women is crucial for ending hunger and poverty.? By denying women rights and opportunities, we deny their children and societies a better future.

This is why the United Nations recently launched a programme to empower rural women and enhance food security. ?The joint programme of the three Rome-based food and agricultural organizations and UN Women will work with rural women to remove the barriers they face, and to boost their skills as producers, leaders and entrepreneurs.

When food and nutrition security are improved, rural women have more opportunities to find decent work and provide for the education and health of their children. ?With equal access to land, credit and productive resources, rural women can increase their productivity and sell their goods. ?As equal members of society, rural women can raise their voices as decision-makers and propel sustainable development.

The world has increasingly recognized the vital role that women play in building peace, justice and democracy. ?As we approach the 2015 deadline for achieving the Millennium Development Goals, it is time to invest more in rural women, protect their rights, and improve their status. ?On this International Day, I call on all partners to support rural women, listen to their voices and ideas, and ensure that policies respond to their needs and demands.? Let us do everything we can to enable them to reach their potential for the benefit of all.

World matched record for hottest September _ again

(AP) ? Something about September keeps bringing out the record heat in the world.

The globe last month matched a record for the hottest September, set in 2005. It was the third time since 2000 that the world set or tied a heat record for September. In addition to 2012 and 2005, previous hot September records were set in 2003. And these records go back to 1880.

Last month's average temperature was 60.2 degrees Fahrenheit worldwide, which is 1.2 degrees above normal, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said Monday.

NOAA climate monitoring chief Deke Arndt said it may be worth studying why September, more than other months, keeps setting world records. It might be the lengthening of the Northern Hemisphere summer as a result of man-made global warming and continual loss of Arctic sea ice that indirectly helps cool other parts of the world, said University of Victoria climate scientist Andrew Weaver.

This is the 16th time that the world has set or tied a hot temperature record since 2000, according to NOAA. The last time the world set a cold temperature record was in December 1916, nearly 96 years ago.

These record-setting trends are man-made global warming at work, Weaver said.

"What's playing out is precisely what climate said we should expect to see 20 to 30 years ago," Weaver said.

For most of the year, world temperatures were warmer than normal, but not near record levels. At the same time, the United States kept setting heat records. But that reversed in September. It was a record hot month for the world, but the United States ranked as only the 23rd hottest. NOAA climate monitoring chief Deke Arndt said the heat was widespread, but most intense in South America, Japan, Russia, Canada and the Atlantic Ocean.

Two weather factors may be in play, Weaver and Arndt said. The La Nina weather oscillation ? which is the flip side of El Nino and tends to depress global temperatures slightly ? ended. And the Arctic was unusually warm and had a record amount of sea ice melting, factors that alter weather throughout the Northern Hemisphere.

This is the 331st consecutive month with global temperatures above the 20th century average.

Some skeptics of global warming have been pointing to British data that a London newspaper claims shows no warming since 1997. But the United Kingdom meteorological office and Weaver said the claims are misleading.

"I don't know what data they are looking at," Weaver said. "2010 is the warmest year. 2005 is the second warmest year."

According to NOAA, all of the top ten warmest years on record have occurred after 1997, when the skeptics claimed global warming stopped.

This book instructs the common person in everyday life on how to make a living ? and for some, to make a fortune ? from the Internet adult industry. Anonymously and ethically.

When telecommunications and Internet dot coms started failing as dot bombs in the year 2000, ordinary people continued to make a fortune quietly working at home on the Internet. One of the biggest secrets about the Internet that continues to go unpublished even today is that thousands of people, if not more, have and continue to earn a lucrative living ? with some making substantial fortunes ? working in anonymity in the privacy of their own homes and conducting these businesses in an ethical manner.

It is a big secret, but moreover, it is a ?dirty? big secret. This book highlights some of those success stories among these everyday folk who have managed to secure their future.

Porn has been the vanguard to mainstreamize technological innovation for public consumption in recent media and telecommunications history. Such technologies have included video, 800/900 numbers, cable, world wide web, video streaming, BBS telephone lines, teleconferencing, computer animation/video graphics/graphics rendering, online financial payment systems, ecommerce. For the most part however, most of the technologies have failed to include the everyday person who have little resources to capitalize. However, that changed when porn met the Internet and world wide web.

Because of the nature of the Internet and world wide web, it has been entirely possible for ordinary people with modest means and modest investment dollars to launch a business with adult web sites since the mid-1990?s until even today. The amount of investment required to start can be as low as less than $100 and be in the several hundred dollar range, without extending into the thousand dollar range ? all modest figures within the realm of possibility for most people.

Moreover, the technical knowledge is within the realm of attainability for ordinary, non-programming professionals. All that is required are casual skills with an HTML editor or generator, cheap graphics software or freeware and a web hosting account. Most people are adept enough with a word processor on their personal computers, and if those skills have not already been attained, most people can be familiar enough with these software to be proficient to create adult web sites fairly quickly.

This book is a practical guide on steps necessary to start and operate a successful adult web site business from home. It contains over 270 pages of detailed instructions on a money-making system that the author has proven to work from personal experience and from his network of fellow webmasters.
