Creating a Specific Place List Report in Family Tree Maker 2012

Last week, I discussed how to create a specific Source Usage List Report in?RootsMagic 5,?Family Tree Maker 2012, and?Legacy Family Tree 7.5?genealogy software. ?My purpose was so that I could determine which source citations need to be improved to (near)?Evidence! Explained?quality.? ?The lists created by RootsMagic and Legacy were fairly easy to generate and were useful to me; the list in Family Tree Maker was more difficult to create and was useful.

This week, I want to create a specific Place List Report in each software program listed so that I can determine which Facts in my database for a specific place do not have a Source Citation. ?I want to search the available resources and add source citations for those Facts.?

Other posts in this series include:

* ?Creating a Specific Place List Report in RootsMagic 5

I will use Sudbury, Middlesex County, Massachusetts as my test Place. ?I have already made a Source Usage report for the?Vital Records of Sudbury?book. ?Ideally, I want a Place Usage report that lists these items, ideally in columns:

* ?Place Name
* ?Persons
* Fact Type
* Fact Date
* Fact Source Citation

In?Family Tree Maker 2012, I found that I could make a list of Persons with Facts that contain a specific place name. ?I found that I could also make an Undocumented Facts report for Persons with a specific Fact Place. ?However, I can't create a Report for exactly what I want - with the Source citation listed if there is one.

Here is the process for the two Reports that come the closest to what I want:

1) ?Place Usage Report for a specific place:

In the "Places" workspace, the list of Places in my database appeared with the places on the left, the map in the middle showing the selected and highlighted place, and the Persons with Facts for the selected Place. ?I scrolled down the place list to Sudbury, Massachusetts:

The list of Persons on the right is what I want to obtain - so I clicked the "Share" button in the upper right-hand corner of the screen and saw a dropdown menu:

I chose :Export Place Usage Report for This Place," and saw the report:

The "Place Usage Report" has listings for Sudbury, Massachusetts, including the Person's name, the Fact Type, and Fact Date. ?However, this report includes all Facts with the selected Place name, including those for which I already have a source citation. ?That's OK for now. ?I like this report.

2) ?The Undocumented Facts Report:

In the "Publish" workspace and the "Source Reports" collection, there is an "Undocumented Facts" Report option.

After selecting the "Undocumented Facts" Report, I clicked the "Selected Individuals" radio button, which opened the "Filter Individuals" window so that I could select persons for the report. ?I clicked on the "Filter In >" button in the "Filter Individuals" window, and the "Filter Individuals by Criteria" window opened:
In the screen above, I selected the "Other" radio button, selected "Any Fact Places" in the "Search where" dropdown menu, selected "Contains" and entered "Sudbury" in the "Where" field. ?I clicked on "OK" and 405 persons were selected:
After licking on "OK" the "Undocumented Facts" report for all instances of "Sudbury " as a Place (which might include other states or countries) was created:
This is a 46 page report. ?For each Person, the Facts for that Person, and the Place Name for each Fact are listed.

As you can see in the screen above, there are entries for Sudbury, Suffolk, England, but almost all of the entries are for Sudbury, Massachusetts.

I can use this report to find the Facts for Sudbury, Massachusetts that are not documented, which is what my goal was. ?I can save it as a PDF file, and then use it to find entries in the Sudbury Vital Records book and enter the appropriate source citations in my database.

WATCH: The First Step To End Bullying: Get Involved, From Carrie Goldman

When Carrie Goldman, parenting expert and author of "Bullied", joined me on Mondays with Marlo I had to ask her what she thought the first step was in putting an end to bullying. Carrie's answer was simple: all parents need to get involved with their children's school.

For more ideas and tips on how you can get involved in ending the bullying epidemic, check out some of Carrie's top tips:

  • Recognize The Problem

    Unfortunately, the parents of most bullies are in denial. Prevent your child from becoming a bully by having a consistent, non-authoritarian parenting style. Listen closely to what your child says and be aware of what is going on in their everyday lives.

  • Teach Empathy

    Monitor what your kids are watching on TV. Reality-based TV teaches kids that being mean gets you what you want. Bullies see their targets as "others," not as people, so kids should be taught empathy at a young age.

  • Be Present At Your Child's School

    Volunteer at your child's school, ideally, at lunchtime or during recess. This is where a lot of bullying occurs. If you're not available during the day, you can volunteer in the evenings or after school and use this time to have discussions about bullying with other parents.

  • Look Out For Warning Signs

    If your child is suddenly withdrawn, sad or doesn't want to go to school, they may be a victim of bullying. A lot of girls turn to cutting or eating disorders to deal with their pain. Your child probably won't want to see a counselor, but you're the parent and you need to help even if your child doesn't want to be helped.

  • Create Allies, Not Bystanders

    More than 50% of bullying actions will stop within 10 seconds if someone intervenes. Bullies feed off of bystanders. If you or your child witness an act of bullying: Become a witness: Go to the school, and tell them what you or your child saw. Become an ally: Even if your child is afraid of being taunted for showing support to the victim in front of other kids, he or she can send a text message or email to the bullied child later that evening. Kids who are bullied feel isolated, so even a small action like this can make a big difference

  • Block And Delete Online Bullies

    Take screenshots of online bullying, so you can report it to the school, or even the police if the situation continues to escalate.

  • Prevent Against Physical Attack

    Enroll your child in local martial arts classes. They can learn defensive postures and how to protect themselves. Kids who learn these skills carry themselves more confidently and this might help them become less likely targets.

  • Get The School Involved

    If you have a child who is being bullied and the teacher is dismissive, go to the principal. If the principal is dismissive, go to the school board. If you have evidence, they will take the matter more seriously because ultimately, you can go to the police.

  • Understand Long-Term Impact

    Recent studies have shown that over time, children's brains change and become more sensitive to bullying. They become more fearful, anxious, and smaller triggers can create the same response, much like post-traumatic stress. Later in life, as adults, many of these children have trouble functioning in society as a result of bullying endured at an early age.

  • Set Family Guidelines For Responsible Media Use

    Create a family contract on how you're going to responsibly use all of the technological devices that your children have access to. Go to www.fosi.org/resources, for the Family Online Internet Safety Contract. You can also visit CarrieGoldmanAuthor.com, to find guidance and sample agreements.

  • If Bullying Occurs In Person, Accept A Verbal Taunt

    Accepting a verbal taunt will take the power of the bully away. If someone says you're overweight, say, "Yes, you're right. I'm overweight." Using humor is very helpful.

  • Cognitively Re-Frame A Bullying Statement

    Don't accept blame; say to yourself, "I'm fine." Compliment the bully, and ask the bully for help. For example, you could say, "You're right. I am a bad speller. Can you help me with that?" This will catch them off-guard.

  • Three Simple Steps To Stop Bullying

    1. Witness it - Pay attention to what is going on your child's life. 2. Document it - Gather evidence: take photographs, save damaged property, or even write the incident and date in a journal. 3. Re-frame it - Take care of your child psychologically; help them find a support group where they feel they can belong.
