Aus crush India by an innings & 68 runs

NEW DELHI: Australia took a 2-0 lead in the four-Test series by crushing India by an innings and 68 runs on the fourth day of the second Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Friday.

Scorecard

Ben Hilfenhaus took five wickets including the last scalp of R Ashwin (62) as India were bowled out for 400 runs in their second innings.

Australia were just one wicket away from an innings victory as Nathan Lyon trapped Ishant Sharma plumb in front of the wicket soon after R Ashwin's fifty.

Staring at an innings defeat, India were 351/8 in their second innings at tea.

India lost their eighth wicket when Peter Siddle had Zaheer Khan caught by Shaun Marsh, who took a fine tumbling catch over his head in the covers. Zaheer hit 35 from 26 balls with the help of a six and 5 fours.

India lost Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, captain MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli in quick succession.

James Pattinson got his first wicket when he trapped Kohli plumb in front of the wicket with a full straight delivery that Kohli tried to get across and flick but missed. The ball stayed low as well and hit him right in front.

Ben Hilfenhaus took his fourth wicket by dismissing Dhoni taking an easy return catch. Dhoni looked to drive the full delivery but hit it back without control. It lobbed up to Hilfenhaus who took it easily. It initially seemed as if it was a bump ball as Hilfenhaus did not celebrate, but the slip cordon came haring down in celebration. The on-field umpires referred to the third umpire and the replays showed that the ball came directly off the face of the bat towards the bowler.

Hilfenhaus dismissed Laxman with the second new ball that was pitched full just outside off and moved away just a touch. Laxman was squared up in defense and the ball went past the bat's edge to clip the off-stump leaving Laxman stunned.

Laxman hit 7 fours in his 66-run knock.

Tendulkar missed his 100th ton yet again as Australian captain Michael Clarke had him caught by Michael Hussey at first slip for 80.

Clarke tossed up a delivery outside off, Tendulkar came forward to defend but the ball spun away and took the outside edge, it went to Brad Haddin who was slow in getting up, but such was the luck for Tendulkar that the ball went off Haddin's gloves towards Hussey at first slip.

The moment Tendulkar's wicket fell there was stunned silence at the SCG and one could hear only Haddin and Hussey screaming in delight. Then the crowd gave the master a standing ovation as he departed for a wonderful 80.

Tendulkar hit 9 fours and added 104 runs with VVS Laxman for the fourth wicket.

India lost Gautam Gambhir in the first session.

Laxman scored a 92-ball 50 soon after lunch, which included six fours, to take India past the 250-run mark.

India, resumed at 114/2 on Friday, lost overnight batsman Gambhir (83) but scored 129 runs off 27 overs during the two-hour session.

Tendulkar hit a fighting half-century to lead India's battle alongwith VVS Laxman against the Aussies. Tendulkar's fifty came in 89 balls with the help of seven boundaries.

Earlier in the day, seamer Peter Siddle, who replaced Ben Hilfenhaus, gave Australia a crucial breakthrough as he got rid of Gambhir.

Gambhir, who scored 83 of 142 balls with the help of 11 fours, tried to play the shot on the on-side but it took the leading edge which was well caught by David Warner at point.

Gambhir and Tendulkar added 68 runs for the third wicket.

The conditions were little overcast on Day 4 due to some showers on Thursday evening but the weather is perfectly fine for the game of cricket at the SCG.

India, who have never won a Test series in Australia, reached third day stumps at 114 for two, 354 behind, with Gautam Gambhir on 68 and Sachin Tendulkar eight.

Earlier on the third day of the Test, Indian opener Virender Sehwag (4) and an uncertain Rahul Dravid (29) were cooling their heels in the pavilion, which raises the possibility of an innings defeat in the match.

Michael Hussey remained unbeaten on 150 but the glory of the day belonged to Australian skipper Michael Clarke who was left unconquered on 329, the highest score ever made at the SCG, which is hosting its 100th Test.

Triple centurion Michael Clarke put team interests ahead of personal glory as Australia moved towards a crushing win over India in the second Test.

Captain Clarke, unbeaten on 329, declared Australia's first innings closed at 659 for four to press for victory - despite various individual milestones beckoning.

After building a massive 468-run lead, Clarke called a halt to the onslaught to give his attack seven and a half sessions to bowl India out.

He was rewarded with the key wickets of Virender Sehwag and Rahul Dravid as the tourists dug in to save going 2-0 down in the four-Test series.

India had an early stumble when big-hitter Sehwag was brilliantly plucked from the air by the athletic David Warner at point off Ben Hilfenhaus for four.

Dravid's reputation as "The Wall" took another hit when he was out bowled for the third time in the series, this time by Hilfenhaus for 29.

Gambhir was lucky enough to survive after he was dropped by wicketkeeper Brad Haddin on 66 off James Pattinson in the penultimate over of the day.

Clarke's score is the fourth highest score by an Australian in Test cricket, behind Matthew Hayden (380), Sir Donald Bradman (334) and Mark Taylor (334).

This was the 25th instance of a triple century in Test cricket. Only Bradman, Brian Lara, Virender Sehwag and Chris Gayle are the four batsmen who have hit triple century twice in Tests.

Marlins' Ramirez says he'll accept switch to 3B (AP)

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic ? Hanley Ramirez says he'll accept a position switch to third base so Miami Marlins newcomer Jose Reyes can play shortstop.

When Reyes signed a $106 million, six-year deal with Miami last month, there was speculation Ramirez was unhappy about being supplanted at short. But new manager Ozzie Guillen sold Ramirez on the idea.

"I have spoken with Guillen," Ramirez said. "What we want is to win with the Marlins. We will see what's going to happen with the position switch and everything else. If it's third base, OK. Wherever they put me to win, I will do so."

With Reyes at shortstop and Ramirez at third, the Marlins become stronger defensively at both positions, and more potent offensively. Reyes hit .337 with the New York Mets last year to win the NL batting title, and Ramirez ? a career .306 hitter ? was the 2009 batting champ.

The two Dominicans are friendly, although Reyes recently said he hadn't heard from his fellow All-Star since signing.

"Between Reyes and me there is no problem," Ramirez said. "I respect him very much. He is a great person."

Ramirez spoke while taking batting practice at a Santo Domingo stadium Friday. He missed the final two months of last season with a left shoulder injury that required surgery.

"The shoulder is responding, and it's 95 percent rehabbed," Ramirez said. "I'm happy and better than ever."

He said he's excited about the Marlins' offseason spending spree, which included the signings of Reyes, left-hander Mark Buehrle and All-Star closer Heath Bell, each an All-Star.

"We are a new Marlins club," Ramirez said. "There's also a new Hanley. Good stuff is coming for next season."

(AP) ? Eric Lindros stepped out of the dugout to a roar he hadn't heard in Philadelphia in almost 12 years.

Big E had his standing O.

Lindros pointed his stick toward nearly 49,000 fans and took his long-overdue walk toward the infield ice to join his Flyers teammates. One of the great players in a franchise loaded with them was back in the orange and black.

With a packed Philadelphia crowd standing and going wild in appreciation, Lindros made a triumphant return to the city in a Philadelphia Flyers jersey, a bitter parting more than a decade ago forgotten from the moment No. 88 hit the ice for warmups.

The red reserved for the Phillies at Citizens Bank park gave way to 40,000 fans in Flyers orange ? so many who paid just to see Lindros play in the alumni showcase, a prelude to Monday's Winter Classic between the Flyers and New York Rangers.

Lindros assisted on the first goal of the game, connecting with former Legion of Doom linemate John LeClair, to help the former Flyers beat the old-time Rangers 3-1 Saturday.

"It really felt special here," Lindros said. "It's nice to be back and heading out to restaurants and hearing the well wishes around town. I'm happy to be here and catch up with some people I haven't seen in a while."

Lindros' last appearance for the Flyers was in May 2000 when he was laid out by New Jersey's Scott Stevens in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference finals.

He would be traded 15 months later to the Rangers because of a nasty falling out with former general manager Bobby Clarke.

All was forgiven Saturday.

Lindros and Clarke, who won two Stanley Cups with the Flyers in the 1970s, chatted and skated together during warmups. Clarke received a huge ovation from the 45,808 fans who filled a reconfigured ballpark. Lindros also took a seat on the bench during intermission with youth teams playing on an auxiliary rink.

The two Flyers greats ? who led a triumphant final lap around the ice when the team left the Spectrum in 1996 ? hadn't talked since the trade until this weekend.

"It's good. We talked this morning and everything's great," Lindros said.

Clarke, still an adviser to the Flyers, stood by his comments that all ill will toward Lindros evaporated the day of the New York trade.

"He's 38. He can make a comeback," Clarke said, laughing.

After Lindros, the loudest cheers were reserved for goalie Bernie Parent. "Bernie! Bernie! Bernie!" echoed throughout the park for the affable goalie, who sparked the phrase in the '70s, "Only The Lord Saves More Than Bernie Parent."

Parent played 5 minutes, 32 seconds and stopped all six shots. Each save made the "Bernie!" chants return.

"I felt the pressure," Parent said. "Once you get on the ice, you want to perform, you want to do well in front of your fans."

Shjon Podein and Mark Howe also scored for the Flyers and Pat Quinn was behind the bench.

Flyers founder and chairman Ed Snider dropped the puck for the ceremonial faceoff between honorary captains Clarke and Mark Messier.

Messier, Brian Leetch, Adam Graves and Stephane Matteau were among the former Rangers who returned for this reunion, also having won the franchise's last Stanley Cup in 1994. Mike Keenan coached the Rangers.

"These were successful players who had successful runs," Keenan said.

Glenn Anderson scored in the second period for the Rangers.

"Once you get to a certain age and have bypassed your prime, there's a lot of mistakes and it's pretty funny to watch," Anderson said.

Wins and goals hardly mattered Saturday.

This was all about Lindros' homecoming.

Lindros and the Flyers had been estranged since their breakup more than a decade ago. Lindros won a Hart Trophy as NHL MVP, made six All-Star teams, and led the Flyers to the Stanley Cup finals in 1997. His career was shortened by a series of concussions, and clashes with management paved his way out of town.

From the moment No. 88 peeked out of the Phillies' dugout, the crowd stood and started cheering. The fans went wild when Lindros took the long walk to the infield rink that stretched from first base to third base.

He raised his arms in triumph and broke into a wide smile after his feed to LeClair put the Flyers up 1-0. LeClair, Lindros and winger Mikael Renberg comprised the popular and productive Legion of Doom line in the 1990s that helped the Flyers out of their darkest era in franchise history and into the finals.

The game served as opening act for a week's worth of games. High school, college and minor league teams will play at Citizens Bank Park and there's an open skate for fans.

Saturday's start time was pushed back two hours to 3 p.m. for more ideal temperatures for the outdoor game.

The NHL expects Monday's game to start at its scheduled 1 p.m. time.

"We have a pretty big window to get the game in," said NHL Chief Operating Officer John Collins.

Collins addressed other topics on the future of the Winter Classic:

?The NHL isn't likely to stretch much beyond the Midwest for future Winter Classics because it likes the 1 p.m. EST window on Jan. 1 or 2.

?The NHL has considered Citi Field, MetLife Stadium, the Yale Bowl, and even West Point as potential sites in New York/New Jersey. Detroit is in the mix as potential future site.

?The NHL and HBO have not yet talked about a "24/7" going forward for 2012.

?Canadian teams could become part of the Classic.

?Collins on the Jan. 1 day off: "It's not ideal that we have this dead day tomorrow. But it's kind of nice in that it stretches the event over a couple of days and I think there are more fans who have the ability to come out and touch it and feel it."

Moon countdown: Hours until 1st NASA probe arrives (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? NASA is counting down the seconds until its twin spacecraft bound for the moon make back-to-back arrivals over the New Year's weekend.

The washing machine-size probes have been cruising independently toward their destination since launching in September aboard the same rocket on a mission to measure lunar gravity.

Approaching the moon from the south pole, the Grail spacecraft ? short for Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory ? won't land on the surface, but will survey from orbit.

On New Year's Eve, Grail-A was poised to fire its engine for more than a half hour to slow itself and get captured into orbit. Grail-B will follow suit on New Year's Day.

Deep space antennas in the California desert and Madrid will track the tricky maneuvers and feed real-time updates to ground controllers.

"The anxiety level is heightened," project manager David Lehman of the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory said earlier this week.

Grail is the 110th mission to target the moon since the dawn of the Space Age including the six Apollo moon landings that put 12 astronauts on the surface. Despite the attention the moon has received, scientists don't know everything about Earth's nearest neighbor.

Why the moon is ever so slightly lopsided with the far side more mountainous than the side that always faces Earth remains a mystery. A theory put forth earlier this year suggested that Earth once had two moons that collided early in the solar system's history, producing the hummocky region.

Grail is expected to help researchers better understand why the moon is asymmetrical and how it formed by mapping the uneven lunar gravity field that will indicate what's below the surface.

"It seems that the answer is not on the surface," said chief scientist Maria Zuber of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. "We think that the answer is locked in the interior."

Previous lunar missions have attempted to study the moon's gravity ? which is about one-sixth Earth's pull ? with mixed results. Grail is the first mission devoted to this goal.

Once in orbit, the near-identical spacecraft will spend the next two months refining their positions until they are just 34 miles above the surface and flying in formation. Data collection will begin in March.

The $496 million mission will be closely watched by schoolchildren. An effort by Sally Ride, the first American woman in space, will allow middle school students to use cameras aboard the probes to zoom in and pick out their favorite lunar spots to photograph.

Despite the latest focus on the moon, NASA won't be sending astronauts back anytime soon. The Obama administration last year nixed a lunar return in favor of landing humans on an asteroid and eventually Mars.

A jaunt to the moon ? about 250,000 miles away from Earth ? is usually speedy. It took the Apollo astronauts three days to zip there aboard the powerful Saturn V rocket. Since NASA wanted to economize by launching on a small rocket, it took Grail a leisurely 3 1/2 months to make the trip covering 2 1/2 million miles.

NASA's last moonshot occurred in 2009 with the launch of a pair of spacecraft ? one that circled the moon and another that deliberately crashed into the surface and uncovered frozen water in one of the permanently shadowed lunar craters.
