Assad reported to confirm Russian missile shipment

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syrian President Bashar Assad on Thursday was quoted as saying his regime has received from Russia a first shipment of sophisticated anti-aircraft missiles ? game-changing weapons that are bound to further raise regional tension, particularly with Israel whose defense chief has called them a threat.

In a new setback to international efforts to end Syria's civil war, the main Western-backed Syrian opposition group announced that it would not participate in U.N.-sponsored peace talks that were to have been launched in Geneva.

The decision could torpedo the only peace plan the international community has been able to rally behind, although prospects for its success appeared doubtful from the start.

Assad made the comments about the arrival of the long-range S-300 air defense missiles in an interview with Lebanon's Hezbollah-owned TV station Al-Manar, to be aired later Thursday. The station sent the remarks to journalists in a text message ahead of the broadcast and confirmed them in a phone call.

U.S. officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter, said they have no evidence the missiles were delivered

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said Secretary of State John Kerry told Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov again this week that the U.S. is concerned about Moscow's continued financial and military support for the Assad regime

Two Jordan-based Western diplomats said some missiles arrived in Syria this week. The diplomats, who insisted on anonymity because identifying them could impede their intelligence gathering, said it would take between five to 10 days to make the systems operational.

The U.S. and Israel had both urged Russia to cancel the missile deal, but Moscow said it would honor its planned weapons sales to Syria. Assad was quoted as telling Al-Manar that "Russia is committed to implementing these contracts."

The S-300s would bolster Syria's air defense, including against possible attacks from Israel, which earlier this month launched two airstrikes on suspected weapons shipments near the Syrian capital Damascus.

The air defense system could also make it harder for the international community to enforce a no-fly zone to assist the Syrian rebels fighting Assad ? something it did in the 2011 civil war in Libya.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said Wednesday that every option in Syria is on the table, including a no-fly zone.

Russia's Foreign Ministry said the latest comments about a no-fly zone raise doubt about the sincerity of U.S. support for launching Syria peace talks.

In a statement, the ministry cautioned the U.S. against a "bellicose agenda in Syria."

The developments raise fears of an arms race ? in Syria and in the wider Middle East. Earlier this week, the European Union lifted an arms embargo, paving way for member states to send weapons to rebels.

There was no official comment from Israel. Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon said earlier this week that Russia's plan to supply Syria with the weapons was a threat and signaled that Israel was prepared to use force to stop the delivery.

Israel's airstrikes this month are believed to have destroyed weapons shipments bound for Hezbollah, the Lebanese Shiite group that supports Assad, along with Iran and Russia. It is not clear whether Israeli warplanes entered Syrian airspace in these attacks.

If Syria indeed received the first S-300s, the Israeli air force's ability to strike in Syria could be limited. The S-300s have a range of up to 200 kilometers (125 miles) and can track and strike multiple targets at once.

Syria already possesses Russian-made air defenses.

Syria did not respond to Israel's recent strikes. However, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem warned Wednesday that Damascus "will retaliate immediately" if Israel strikes Syrian soil again. It was not clear if there was a link between al-Moallem's remark and the Russian shipment.

In Thursday's interview, Assad said that "Syria has received the first shipment of Russian anti-aircraft S-300 rockets," according to Al-Manar. It also quoted him as saying that "All our agreements with Russia will be implemented and parts of them have already been implemented."

Meanwhile, the main political opposition group, the Syrian National Coalition, said Thursday it would not attend the Geneva talks, linking the decision to the battle for the strategic western Syrian town of Qusair.

Iranian-backed Hezbollah is heavily involved in the 12-day-old push to drive rebels from the town. Coalition officials claimed Thursday that hundreds of peopled wounded in the fighting were trapped in the town.

"The talk about the international conference and a political solution to the situation in Syria has no meaning in light of the massacres that are taking place," coalition spokesman Khalid Saleh told reporters in Istanbul, where the opposition has been holding week-long deliberations on a strategy for the Geneva talks.

He said the group will not support any international peace efforts in light of the "invasion" of Syria by Iran and Hezbollah.

The opposition's announcement came just a day after al-Moallem said the government would attend the planned peace conference in Geneva but laid out terms that made it difficult for the opposition to accept.

Al-Moallem said Assad will remain president at least until elections in 2014 and might seek another term, and that any deal reached in such talks would have to be put to a referendum.

Psaki, the State Department spokesman, said she hoped it was not the coalition's final word on the Geneva conference.

She said Robert Ford, the U.S. ambassador to Syria, is in Istanbul trying to help the opposition sort through its internal problems. Once members have decided on issues such as expanded membership and leadership, the U.S. hopes they will recommit to peace talks, Psaki said.

Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister, accused the coalition of trying to set pre-conditions, by demanding that Assad's departure from office must be the focus of any peace talks. He called such a demand "unrealistic."

He urged the U.S. and Europe to "restrain those who are encouraging such unacceptable and aggressive approaches on the part of the National Coalition."

If the diplomatic option is now off the table, following the opposition's decision, the West, including the U.S., will have to come up with a new approach. President Barack Obama could face renewed pressure to help the rebels militarily.

The U.S. had hoped a dialogue between representatives of the regime and the opposition could set a timetable for Assad's removal, said Salman Shaikh, director of the Brookings Doha Center. "That policy is now in tatters," he said.

Meanwhile, fighting continued Thursday in Qusair, and the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a pro-opposition group, said regime forces now control most of the town.

Both sides value Qusair, which lies along a land corridor linking two of Assad's strongholds, the capital Damascus and an area along the Mediterranean coast. For the rebels, holding the town means protecting their supply line to Lebanon, just 10 kilometers (six miles) away.

More than 70,000 people have been killed in the 26-month-old Syrian conflict that has had increasingly sectarian overtones. Members of Syria's Sunni Muslim majority dominate the rebel ranks and Assad's regime is mostly made up of Alawites, an offshoot sect of Shiite Islam.

Independent Rhode Island governer defects to the Democratic party

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) ? Independent Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee is joining the Democratic Party ahead of his bid for a second term, his spokeswoman said Wednesday, confirming a move that Chafee has been talking about for months.

The governor, a former Republican senator, made a methodical decision that came down to principles and policy and not political calculation, spokeswoman Christine Hunsinger said.

Chafee served in the U.S. Senate as a Republican but left the GOP in 2007. He was elected as the nation's only independent governor in 2010.

Chafee has been saying for months that he was thinking about the switch, noting that he shares many positions with Democrats and that joining the party will help with fundraising. He is a supporter of President Barack Obama and spoke at last year's Democratic National Convention.

Obama welcomed Chafee, a longtime political ally of his, to the party, the White House said, but many local Democrats declined to immediately weigh in, with some saying they hadn't been informed of Chafee's plan and others declining to comment.

"Gov. Chafee has been a longtime supporter of President Obama and not as a party matter but as a supporter of the president and his policy proposals," White House spokesman Jay Carney said.

The move further complicates next year's Democratic primary and sets up the possibility of a three-way matchup with Providence Mayor Angel Taveras and Treasurer Gina Raimondo.

Spokespeople for Taveras and Raimondo did not immediately return messages seeking comment, and other prominent Democrats within the state either had not heard or did not immediately comment. House Speaker Gordon Fox, the most powerful Democrat in state politics, had not been told of any plan by Chafee to switch parties, a spokesman for Fox said.

Former longtime Democratic Congressman Patrick Kennedy told the AP the move makes sense for Chafee given his political views, including his support for Obama's health care overhaul and his longtime support for legalizing same-sex marriage, which he recently signed into law in Rhode Island. Kennedy said Chafee's views "put him in the mainstream of the Democratic Party."

"He has been very progressive in those ways and I think he'll find a lot of people embracing him, and I think welcoming him," Kennedy said, adding that it would be great to have him join the party.

Registered Democrats outnumber registered Republicans in Rhode Island more than three to one, although most voters aren't affiliated with any party.

When asked how local Democrats will react, given the likelihood that two longtime Democrats are already running for governor, Kennedy, who now lives in New Jersey, said Democrats know Chafee shares their core principles.

"He is the incumbent governor, and he has been a strong supporter of our incumbent president, and I think it would be important for us to acknowledge his support for the traditional principles of the Democratic Party. It's not like he's becoming a Democrat for political expediency alone. He's been consistent," Kennedy said.

Brown University political science Prof. Wendy Schiller said changing parties is a risky move for the governor, setting up a matchup with two of the state's most popular politicians with built in bases of support.

Taveras is Hispanic and is likely to compete with Chafee for the support of organized labor. Raimondo could win over more conservative Democrats and tussle with Chafee for the party's female base.

"I still do not see the significant gain for Chafee in switching parties," Schiller told The Associated Press. "Raimondo and Taveras represent the future of the Democratic Party. They span a wide spectrum of Democratic voters. I think he'd really benefit if those two really beat each other up."

Schiller also downplayed the fundraising advantage to switching parties, saying his status as the nation's only independent governor gave him a distinction he will lose by becoming just another Northeast Democrat.

"I just don't think there's room for Chafee," she said. "I don't see him coming out with a victory."

Chafee is son of the late U.S. Sen. John Chafee, a former governor whose name was synonymous with the Republican Party in Rhode Island for decades. When John Chafee died in office in 1999, Lincoln Chafee was appointed to fill his seat, and then won re-election to the post the following year. In the Senate, he voted to the left of many Democrats, opposing the war in Iraq, for example. But he stuck it out as a Republican through his 2006 re-election campaign, which he lost to Whitehouse.

He left the party in 2007 and became an independent. He made his political comeback in 2010, winning a four-way race for governor with 36 percent of the vote.

As governor, Chafee has struggled with poor approval ratings and some of his policy proposals have fizzled in the face of opposition in the Democratic-controlled General Assembly, such as an early plan to expand the sales tax.

Chafee is a reluctant fundraiser, and he has often depended on personal wealth to fund his campaigns. He told The Associated Press in December that he was considering joining the Democrats to help his chances of winning a second term.

"There is no independent governors' association throwing money around ... but there is a Democratic Governors Association," he said at the time.

Tsarnaev friend unarmed when killed, FBI admits. Were civil rights violated?

The FBI has confirmed that a friend of slain Boston bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev was unarmed and not waving a samurai sword when he was shot and killed last week by an FBI agent in Orlando, Fla., as earlier reports had indicated.

The FBI says Ibragim Todashev, 27, a Chechen immigrant and aspiring martial arts fighter, was about to sign a confession to a 2011 triple murder when he turned a table on an FBI agent, putting the agent in jeopardy. The agent then fired as many as 7 shots, hitting Mr. Todashev at least once in the head.

The agency is investigating the shooting, which has been listed by the Orange County medical examiner as a homicide. As county officials are not elaborating on that determination, the legal implications for the FBI are so far unclear.

But the Florida chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, or CAIR, has asked the Department of Justice for a separate investigation into whether the FBI violated Todashev's civil rights.

"We have confirmed through senior sources within the FBI that Ibragim was indeed unarmed when he was shot seven times in the head, what appears to be even in the back of the head," said Hassan Shibly, executive director of CAIR Florida. "That's very disturbing."

Mr. Shibly told reporters on Wednesday that the group wants "to make sure excessive force was not used against this unarmed individual."

On Thursday, Todashev's father, Abdul-Baki Todashev, showed Russian journalists a series of photos of his son's body that he says suggests he was executed with a shot in the back of the head. Max Seddon of the Associated Press writes that "it was not immediately possible to authenticate the photographs."

Given the high profile and high-stakes nature of the Tsarnaev investigation, as well as international and national security implications, the bureau has a compelling reason to have a thorough and transparent investigation into Todashev's death, terror experts say.

"This is going to be a smorgasbord for every conspiracy [theorist] out there," says Brian Levin, director of the Center for the Study of Hate & Extremism at California State University, San Bernardino. "This could be anything from a civil rights violation, to reasonable force, to suicide by cop.

"But," he continues, "it doesn't appear there's a motive for the bureau to have this guy dead. There's no institutional motive for that. That means that something happened with respect to two guys in that room at the time.

?Was this agent trigger happy? Was he in legitimate fear of his life with this martial arts guy in a room alone, flipping a table over, perhaps lunging for his gun? That's a split second amount of time to make a decision."

The shooting of Todashev became the latest twist in an investigation into the twin bombs set off at the Boston Marathon, killing three people and wounding 260. One of the suspects, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, was injured and then killed during a firefight with police, and his younger brother, Dzokhar Tsarnaev, was found hiding, wounded, in a boat, a day later after a massive manhunt that shut down much of the Boston metropolitan area.

In a missive scrawled on the walls of the boat before he was captured, Dzhokar Tsarnaev reportedly suggested the attacks were in retaliation to the US wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Since the bombings, the FBI has sought to connect Tamerlan with a triple homicide in Waltham, Mass., on Sept. 11, 2011, and that investigation brought them to Todashev, a fellow Chechen and martial arts fighter whom Tsarnaev had met in a Boston gym.

But among the questions raised by Todashev's death, constitutional law experts say, is the extent to which the questioning was voluntary, why it was conducted at his home, and whether Todashev could have ended the questioning at any point.

"Did he feel he was free to leave, was this something voluntary, given that courts have said that even the presence of a fair number of officers means that there can be a coerceive context?" Mr. Levin asks.

Reports from anonymous law enforcement sources suggest that other agents, including officers from the Massachusetts State Police, had left the room briefly when Todashev attacked the FBI agent.

The Orlando NBC affiliate station has reported that a samurai-style sword had been moved to a corner of the room before Todashev was questioned, citing sources who said the agent may have thought Todashev was going for the sword. The Washington Post, however, cited two anonymous law enforcement sources who said Todashev was not in possession of the weapon when he was killed.

Todashev has not been linked to the Boston bombings, though police say he was friendly with the Tsaernevs when he lived in Boston. He subsequently moved to Atlanta, then Orlando.

Task master: Categorizing rewards improves motivation

May 29, 2013 ? What truly inspires individuals to perform at their very best? When it comes to motivating others and ourselves, it turns out offering rewards in defined categories, even when they are largely meaningless, can heighten motivation. According to recent research co-authored by Scott S. Wiltermuth, assistant professor of management and organization at USC's Marshall School of Business, even if the rewards are the similar -- and the categories arbitrary -- the very act of segmenting rewards motivates people to perform better and longer, even on menial tasks.

Wiltermuth's study, "'l'll Have One of Each': How Separating Rewards into (Meaningless) Categories Increases Motivation," co-authored with Francesca Gino, associate professor of business administration at Harvard University, was published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. Through the study, Wiltermuth and Gino found that individuals were more motivated by obtaining one reward from one category and an additional reward from a separate category than by choosing two rewards from a pool that included all items from either reward category. As a result, they worked longer when potential rewards for work were separated into categories regardless of the prize value. Categorizing rewards had positive effects on motivation by increasing the degree to which participants felt they would "miss out" if they did not obtain the second reward.

In a series of six related experiments, participants were asked to do mundane tasks for either 10- or 20-minute increments for a set number of rewards. Items from a dollar store were presented as prizes.

In the first experiment, participants were told that if they transcribed copy for 10 minutes they could take home one item, and if they worked for 20 minutes they could take two items. The first group was told they could take two items from either bin, while another group was told they could take one item from one bin and, if they worked longer, a second item from the second bin. The researchers found that while only 10 percent of those who could take items from either bin without conditions transcribed for 20 minutes, 34 percent of the group whose prizes were from segmented categories did so. Thus, mentally separating these perks into bins or categories increased participants' time commitment to the transcription by playing into their desire to minimize the risk of "missing out."

In a later experiment to test the "missing out" theory, the researchers again offered items from two bins, plus an added condition whereby there were four different bins from which to choose. When four bins were present, telling participants that they could select one item from one category and another from a second category did not improve motivation. Participants were not as excited by obtaining the second reward because there were still two more categories or bins that remained inaccessible.

"It was really the desire to eliminate the fear of missing out that led to people work hard when there were two different categories," said Wiltermuth. "If they couldn't eliminate the fear of missing out, which would be the case when they had more categories of items, they didn't work very hard. They were at levels comparable to the single category."

"This also could apply to individual goals in the context of, dieting, for example. Wiltermuth, said, "If I drop five pounds, I might get this type of reward. If I drop another five pounds, I'm going to get another type of reward."

In sum motivation boils down to this says Wiltermuth, "Instead of presenting one big reward, set up a few small rewards. Even if they're not all that different, making people think they are different can get people to devote increased effort in pursuit of those goals." "Creating excitement just simply by categorizing rewards could be a key way to get people to try harder, and devote more time to tasks."

Why Pentagon has doubts about no-fly zone over Syria

Reports suggest the Pentagon is preparing no-fly zone plans for Syria, but experts and Pentagon officials say such a strategy might not accomplish much.

By Anna Mulrine,?Staff writer / May 29, 2013

This image taken from video obtained from Ugarit News shows a Syrian fighter jet in a hangar after rebels captured Jarrah airfield in Aleppo province in February. The Syrian Air Force is responsible for only a small fraction of the attacks against rebel forces, Pentagon officials say.

Reports this week that the Pentagon is putting together plans for a no-fly zone over Syria came as little surprise to most defense analysts ? after all, senior US military officials are constantly planning for war possibilities.

' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; // google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

What is surprising, however, are concerns both within the halls of the Pentagon and among analysts as to whether a no-fly zone would actually be very helpful in protecting civilians and antigovernment fighters on the ground.

What?s more, a US military operation to create a no-fly zone could easily go awry, they add.?

Pentagon spokesman George Little dismissed the notion of any new strategizing on the Syrian front. ?There is no new military planning effort underway with regard to Syria,? he said in a statement, adding that the Joint Staff is forging ahead with ?prudent planning for a range of possible military options.?

But just how prudent would a no-fly zone be? ?For all the talk of no-fly zones, Syrian aircraft are not that relevant,? says a senior US military official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.?

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Martin Dempsey has noted that only 10 percent of casualties sustained by Syrian opposition forces are being imposed by air power. The other 90 percent come from direct fire or artillery.?

What?s more, he added in remarks at a Monitor breakfast last month, ?whether the military effect would produce the kind of outcome I think that not only members of Congress but all of us would desire ? which is an end to the violence, some kind of political reconciliation among the parties, and a stable Syria ? that?s the reason I?ve been cautious, is the right word, about the application of the instrument of power, because it?s not clear to me that it would produce that outcome.??

The outcome of such an operation has the potential to ignite a larger regional war, says Aram Nerguizian, senior fellow at the Arleigh A. Burke Chair in Strategy at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington.

?The risk is that things are bad enough regionally that if you have a US pilot who ends up killed or captured by [Syrian President Bashir] Assad?s forces, it offers, at best, a diplomatic opportunity for communication, but at worst, the sort of incident that leads to a larger war,? Mr. Nerguizian says.

The shoot-down of a US fighter jet is far from a remote possibility. Sen. John McCain (R) of Arizona, on the heels of his highly-publicized visit with Syrian rebel forces this week, acknowledged that US fighter jet pilots would have to ?fly into the teeth of Syria?s air defenses? in the event of a no-fly zone.

What?s more, though a no-fly zone may seem like a highly compartmentalized military operation, its impacts could ripple in a region where a number of world powers have a stake.

?A no-fly zone cannot be disconnected from the fact that this war for Syria is a regional war,? Nerguizian says, citing Sunni-Shia fault lines within Syria, as well as US-Iranian competition.

There is, too, a ?third layer that many allies thought was nonexistent for years: a US-Russia dynamic. All of these things are overlapping in a way that makes this a powder keg,? he adds. ?We don?t have visibility on how Hezbollah could retaliate, how Iran would respond, and how the Russians would handle it.??

That doesn?t mean that a no-fly zone ?is a nonoption, but it does mean that the costs are, frankly, very difficult to predict.?

Could the mosquito become a new 'model organism' for genetics research?

In one of the first successful attempts at genetically engineering mosquitoes, Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) researchers have altered the way the insects respond to odors, including the smell of humans and the insect repellant DEET. The research not only demonstrates that mosquitoes can be genetically manipulated using the latest research techniques, but paves the way to understanding why the insect is so attracted to humans, and how to block that attraction.

"The time has come now to do genetics in these important disease-vector insects. I think our new work is a great example that you can do it," says Leslie Vosshall, an HHMI investigator at Rockefeller University who led the new research, published May 29, 2013 in the journal Nature.

In 2007, scientists announced the completion of the full genome sequence of Aedes aegypti, the mosquito that transmits dengue and yellow fever. A year later, when Vosshall became an HHMI investigator, she shifted the focus of her lab from Drosophila flies to mosquitoes with the specific goal of genetically engineering the insects. Studying mosquitoes appealed to her because of their importance as disease carriers, as well as their unique attraction to humans.

Vosshall's first target: a gene called orco, which her lab had deleted in genetically engineered flies 10 years earlier.

"We knew this gene was important for flies to be able to respond to the odors they respond to," says Vosshall. "And we had some hints that mosquitoes interact with smells in their environment, so it was a good bet that something would interact with orco in mosquitoes."

Vosshall's team turned to a genetic engineering tool called zinc-finger nucleases to specifically mutate the orco gene in Aedes aegypti. They injected the targeted zinc-finger nucleases into mosquito embryos, waited for them to mature, identified mutant individuals, and generated mutant strains that allowed them to study the role of orco in mosquito biology. The engineered mosquitoes showed diminished activity in neurons linked to odor-sensing. Then, behavioral tests revealed more changes.

When given a choice between a human and any other animal, normal Aedes aegypti will reliably buzz toward the human. But the mosquitoes with orco mutations showed reduced preference for the smell of humans over guinea pigs, even in the presence of carbon dioxide, which is thought to help mosquitoes respond to human scent. "By disrupting a single gene, we can fundamentally confuse the mosquito from its task of seeking humans," says Vosshall. But they don't yet know whether the confusion stems from an inability to sense a "bad" smell coming from the guinea pig, a "good" smell from the human, or both.

Next, the team tested whether the mosquitoes with orco mutations responded differently to DEET. When exposed to two human armsone slathered in a solution containing 10 percent DEET, the active ingredient in many bug repellants, and the other untreatedthe mosquitoes flew equally toward both arms, suggesting they couldn't smell the DEET. But once they landed on the arms, they quickly flew away from the DEET-covered one. "This tells us that there are two totally different mechanisms that mosquitoes are using to sense DEET," explains Vosshall. "One is what's happening in the air, and the other only comes into action when the mosquito is touching the skin." Such dual mechanisms had been discussed but had never been shown before.

Vosshall and her collaborators next want to study in more detail how the orco protein interacts with the mosquitoes' odorant receptors to allow the insects to sense smells. "We want to know what it is about these mosquitoes that makes them so specialized for humans," she says. "And if we can also provide insights into how existing repellants are working, then we can start having some ideas about what a next-generation repellant would look like."

ST-Ericsson sells GPS business to Intel

By Astrid Wendlandt and Noel Randewich

PARIS/SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - ST-Ericsson, a money-losing joint venture being wound down by owners STMicroelectronics and Ericsson, has sold its GPS mobile business to Intel.

ST-Ericsson, which focuses on mobile and wireless chips, announced the sale on Tuesday without naming the buyer. An Intel spokesman later said the U.S. chipmaker bought the assets.

Neither company revealed the price, but ST-Ericsson said the proceeds from the sale, combined with the avoidance of employee restructuring charges and other related restructuring costs, would reduce the joint venture's cash needs by approximately $90 million.

STMicro and Ericsson announced in March they were winding down ST-Ericsson, which has been hit by a big drop in orders from top customer Nokia and has struggled to compete with other chipmakers.

ST-Ericsson's GPS-related intellectual property rights and engineers add to Intel's already existing GPS assets, Intel spokesman Chris Kraeuter said.

'Deadliest Catch' crew could lose a man

TV

The blue-crab season is coming to an end on the next episode of "The Deadliest Catch," and the event could mark the end of the line for one deck hand on The Northwestern.

A preview from Tuesday's night's episode reveals that just as Edgar Hansen closes his maiden voyage as captain, deck boss Jake Anderson considers leaving his band of brothers behind.

"Nobody got hurt," Hansen is seen boasting after the last of the crabs hit the deck. "We're still alive. Boat's still in one piece. We've got crab on the boat. That's pretty big."

Almost as big? The choice Anderson has to make.

"When I get home, I've got the biggest decision I'll ever make in my whole life," he tells the camera. "I can stay here and work with these guys, work on deck -- which I don't really like anymore."

Or he could jump ship -- literally -- to work on another boat.

Whatever he does, "it's going to make a lot of people unhappy," he adds.

See what lies ahead in this exclusive sneak peek:

"Deadliest Catch" airs May 28 at 9 p.m. on Discovery.

Gonzalez, Dodgers rally for 8-7 win over Angels

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Comeback wins haven't come easily to the Dodgers, who had dropped four one-run games in a row.

They staged their biggest rally of the season Monday night, overcoming a five-run deficit to beat the Los Angeles Angels 8-7 in the Freeway Series opener.

"It can definitely be a momentum builder, but you can't have momentum unless you come out tomorrow and play hard," said Adrian Gonzalez, who had a season-high four hits and tied his career high with four runs scored.

Jerry Hairston Jr.'s RBI single scored the go-ahead run in the seventh inning to help the Dodgers snap the Angels' season-high eight-game winning streak in the first of two games at Dodger Stadium before the series shifts to Anaheim for two more.

"It seemed like all over the place guys were getting big hits," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said.

Scott Van Slyke went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and Juan Uribe finished 3 for 3 after entering as a pinch hitter in the fifth.

Gonzalez continued his tear with his third multihit game in a row. He is 9 for 11 with six runs, three doubles and seven RBIs since Saturday.

The Dodgers probably wish Gonzalez's hitting could rub off on slugger Matt Kemp, who continued struggling a day after he was left out of the starting lineup in a 5-3 loss to St. Louis. He was booed heavily as he went hitless in five at-bats with four strikeouts.

"When things aren't going your way you try harder," Gonzalez said. "He's trying too hard for the team and the fans."

Hairston was reinstated from the 15-day disabled list earlier in the day. He was 0 for 2 with a strikeout before he singled off Robert Coello (1-1) with two outs. After Kemp struck out for the third time, Gonzalez singled and Van Slyke struck out before pinch-hitter Andre Ethier walked to set up Hairston.

Ronald Belisario (3-4) faced one batter in the seventh and got an inning-ending, double-play grounder from Hank Conger to earn the victory.

Brandon League pitched the ninth for his 11th save in 13 chances.

Trailing 8-7, the Angels had the potential tying run at first base with two outs in the eighth. Mike Trout flied out to right field and Erick Aybar raced back to first. Gonzalez caught Ethier's throw wide of the bag and lunged to tag Aybar as he ran past, doubling him off first.

Aybar slammed his helmet into the dirt after first base umpire Paul Emmel signaled out, believing Gonzalez had missed the tag. Aybar and first base coach Alfredo Griffin began arguing with Emmel as Angels manager Mike Scioscia rushed out to join them.

Scioscia pushed Aybar out of the way and engaged in an animated debate with Emmel. Scioscia retreated to the dugout, and the replay was inconclusive.

"From our angle ? and we had a pretty good angle on it ? it looked like there was a lot of daylight," Scioscia said. "Erick got a great jump, but the timing wasn't right where he could peek to see where the ball was hit. He made too big of a turn, but he got back to first base. Unfortunately, he didn't get the call."

The Angels tied the game 7-all in the seventh on Howie Kendrick's RBI single.

Van Slyke's tying RBI double capped a four-run fifth for the Dodgers before A.J. Ellis' sacrifice fly put them ahead 7-6 in the sixth.

The Angels took a 6-1 lead with three runs in the fourth on Aybar's RBI double, Trout's RBI triple into the left-field corner and Albert Pujols' sacrifice fly to deep center.

"We're swinging the bats well, but if I had to point out one thing about the streak, it had to be the starting pitching," Trout said. "I think the ERA was like under 2.00. But they came out swinging the bats. They kept battling and putting great at-bats together."

The anticipated pitching duel between Angels lefty C.J. Wilson and Zack Greinke against his old team for the first time fizzled, with neither figuring in the decision.

Wilson gave up six runs and nine hits in 4 2-3 innings, struck out four and walked none.

"I just made bad pitches," he said. "I was trying to make a good pitch and I made a hitter's pitch instead of a pitcher's pitch. It's unfortunate because the offense obviously supported the pitching. I just let them down."

Greinke allowed six runs ? four earned ? and 10 hits in four-plus innings. He struck out two and walked one. Considered the top arm on the free-agent market last winter, the right-hander signed a $147 million, six-year deal to switch Los Angeles teams.

"I made some mistakes, obviously, but overall I did about as well as I could," he said. "It felt like I was going to get them out and they were hitting the ball hard."

NOTES: The Dodgers improved to 5-6 in one-run games this season. ... Kendrick notched his 400th career RBI with a run-scoring double in the third. ... The clubs combined for 11 doubles (six by the Dodgers), a Dodger Stadium record. ... The Angels fell to 20-31 on Memorial Day. ... The Angels are 13-6 in the last 19 games against the Dodgers and 9-4 in the last 13 in Los Angeles. ... The Dodgers optioned SS Dee Gordon to Triple-A Albuquerque. He batted .175 with five steals, a homer and eight RBIs in 19 games with the Dodgers.

Blockbuster 2.0 for iOS arrives, manages the disc rentals we no longer use

Blockbuster 20 for iOS manages all but the streaming you really want

Blockbuster started the month by launching an On Demand app for iOS and embracing the streaming video era. For the end of the month, it's going retro: following a quiet App Store launch earlier in May, the company has formally announced a free Blockbuster 2.0 iOS app that covers everything but streaming. The release is built almost exclusively for traditionalists, letting them manage their Blockbuster By Mail rental queues, scan membership cards and check the stock at those stores that remain open. About the only concessions to modernity are the built-in movie trailers. While the app does give some needed love to disc-based viewers, it's an acute reminder that much of Blockbuster's original audience has moved on.

LG's future plans revealed: Android tab and Firefox phone are coming soon, flexible handheld isn't

LG?s mobile division hasn?t exactly been a money-making machine these past couple of years, but the Nexus 4 and Optimus G have turned the company?s fortunes around a bit. Sure, LG is still not a worthy adversary for Samsung, its neighbor and arch nemesis, but it could get there in no time.

LG's future plans revealed: Android tab and Firefox phone are coming soon, flexible handheld isn't

The Optimus G Pro doesn?t look half bad, the G2 is expected to be one of the world?s first phones to pack a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 CPU, plus there apparently is a new Android-based tablet in the making.

Wait, what? An LG-made tab? But didn?t they say they were not interested in pursuing that road anymore? They did, but that was a long time ago. Plus they clearly specified at the time that tablet development was merely ?on hold?.

Okay, so how will this slate look then? Will it be a budget-conscious 7-incher to take on Google?s Nexus 7 or a premium-looking, high-quality and costly 10-incher to go after Apple?s iPads? I?m sorry, but I don?t have an answer for you yet.

Kim Wong, the company?s European Mobile Vice President, kept vague and only mentioned LG is preparing its Android tablet return in a recent interview, plus he said the Windows 8 ?situation is being closely monitored?.

The executive did go into a little more detail when talking about some of LG?s smartphone plans for the near future, which apparently include a device not based on Android (likely Firefox OS-powered), but sadly no handheld sporting a flexible display.

According to Wong, ?the technology for this is not yet mature enough?, so the earliest we could hope to see an LG bendable phone is the second half of 2014. Bummer!

As for the Optimus G2, LG?s likely next flagship device, this will be pushed globally soon after its formal intro, which goes to show you the Koreans have learned their lesson after the G and G Pro snafus. At least in theory, because it remains to be seen how things will look in reality.?

Is This Apple's First Official Image Of The New iWatch? - Business ...

Apple may have inadvertently (or deliberately, or not at all) given the world a clue to what the long-awaited iWatch might look like, according to 9to5Mac.

At the 30-second mark in a new commercial for the iPhone, called "Music Every Day," a boy can be seen drumming on a table with his hands ... while wearing a chunky black watch with a simple, circle-in-a-square face.

Does this mean the iWatch will use iTunes? Is this a design of which Apple approves?

Who knows.

Here are some screengrabs of the mysterious watch. Click to enlarge:

?

?

Of course, it could just be a trendy watch that the actor brought to the set himself.

Some people (see comments) think the watch is a Newton by Nixon. But the watch in the ad doesn't seem to have the Newton's chunky wind-up button (or at least it isn't visible). And the "iWatch" has some detailing on the face that isn't on the Newton.

Here's the full commercial. The watch appears at about 30 seconds.

10 fans injured when TV cable falls on race track

CONCORD, N.C. (AP) ? Charlotte Motor Speedway said 10 fans were injured Sunday at the Coca-Cola 600 and three of them were taken to the hospital after a nylon rope supporting a Fox Sports overhead television camera fell from the grandstands and landed on the track surface.

According to CMS spokeswoman Danielle Frye the three people taken to the hospital had "minor injuries that are not life threatening." She said seven people were treated with "minor cuts and scrapes" on site and released.

Fox Sports released a statement Sunday night saying it hasn't determined the cause of the accident and it is suspending use of the camera system indefinitely.

"Our immediate concern is with the injured fans," Fox said in the statement.

Fox said the camera system consists of three ropes ? a drive rope that moves the camera back and forth, and two guide ropes on either side. Fox said it was the drive rope that failed near the first-turn connection and fell to the track.

"The camera itself did not come down because guide ropes acted as designed," Fox said in the statement. "A full investigation is planned, and use of the camera is suspended indefinitely."

Fox said it has used the camera system at the Daytona 500, at last week's NASCAR Sprint All-Star race and other major sporting events.

"We certainly regret that the system failure affected tonight's event, we apologize to the racers whose cars were damaged, and our immediate concern is for the race fans," Fox said in the statement. "We also offer a sincere thank you to the staff at CMS for attending to the injuries and keeping us informed on this developing situation."

The incident occurred on lap 121 of the 400-lap NASCAR Sprint Cup race.

The race was delayed for 27 minutes while crews repaired damage to their cars.

Kyle Busch, going for a sweep at Charlotte Motor Speedway after winning the Nationwide and Truck series races, was leading when he incurred damage to the right front wheel well of his No. 18 Toyota.

Marcos Ambrose and Mark Martin also reported damage.

No drivers were injured.

The cars were initially brought along pit row as workers cleared the ropes from the track.

NASCAR first threw a caution flag before two red flags came out. It eventually allowed the cars to come into the pits, giving crews 15 minutes to work on their cars.

During the break, Busch's crew frantically worked to repair a number of problems to the right front wheel well. After completing repairs to the car, the crew slapped high-fives after getting the car back on the track.

Busch remained competitive and was running in the top five at the midpoint of the race. But his night ended in frustration when his engine blew up on lap 253.

"I commend NASCAR for taking the initiative and letting us repair our damaged cars from the issue we had," Busch said.

Busch said he never saw the nylon rope.

"I just heard a big thunk on the right-front side tire and thought the right-front tire blew out," Busch said. "That's how hard it felt... It did have an effect slowing my car down and I could feel it like, 'Whoa, that's weird.' I don't know that anybody has ever seen that. Maybe now we can get rid of that thing."

He has never won a Sprint Cup race at Charlotte Motor Speedway and has suffered his share of bad luck at the track.

Prior to the restart, Ambrose was made to run five laps on his own to make up for the laps missed when he pulled into pit row and the rest of the field was under caution.

In May of 2000, more than 100 fans were injured outside of the CMS when an 80-foot section of the walkway fell an estimated 25 feet onto a highway below. Fans were crossing the bridge to a parking lot following the completion of the NASCAR All-Star race.

The Hasso Plattner Institute's prototype requires players to attach electrodes directly to their forearms to stimulate the muscles

Hasso Plattner Institute

The Hasso Plattner Institute's prototype requires players to attach electrodes directly to their forearms to stimulate the muscles, thus creating a sense of force feedback.

Imagine playing through a level of the popular zombie shooter "Left 4 Dead" on a system that tracks your heart rate, eye movements, even how clammy your skin is getting, all to measure just how scared you are.

For 250 lucky ? or extremely unlucky ? test subjects, fear-based gaming was a reality, at least in an experimental program led by the game studio Valve. If the game could sense that a player was already frightened and frantic, it might ramp up the difficulty to make the gameplay even more frightening and frantic. The point? To make "Left 4 Dead" more fun, of course.

Valve's resident experimental psychologist, Mike Ambinder, said at a conference in San Francisco that the bio-sensitive tests "worked pretty well."

Game makers have struggled to escape the confines of the console for decades, and countless failed products like Nintendo's "Virtual Boy" system show an industry that's still trapped. In the last five years, motion gaming from the likes of Nintendo's Wii and Microsoft's Xbox Kinect has excited audiences, but it's not hard core: the best titles tend to be party games and fitness apps. Motion control may have brought players closer to their consoles, but a future generation of consoles, wearable and bioaware, will get closer to the players ? and maybe even inside of them.

Left 4 Dead

Valve

Would you want to play "Left 4 Dead" if the zombies could literally sense your fear? Valve is hoping that this kind of biofeedback will make its popular shooter even more fun.

Right now, game controllers have rumble packs and "impulse" triggers to let you feel the game as you advance. So how do you make force feedback even more authentic? By sending electrical impulses straight into the muscles of your arms, of course.

"On smartphones, you usually have these little games," Pedro Lopes a Ph.D. student who worked on this project at Germany?s Hasso Plattner Institute, told NBC News. "But I wanted to see: Can we bring this extra degree of immersion? What people canonically have done is use motors. But those are big and heavy. Instead, we use your muscle as a motor."

For the study, Lopes and the rest of the team set participants up with a flying game to play on a smartphone. First, they used a motor-based system, then they used electrodes attached to their forearms. Overwhelmingly, the subjects opted for the "shock."

"They would say things like: 'I feel like this force is really coming from the game!'" Lopes said.

Augmented Reality Gaming

Dekko

Dekko plans to release a table-top board game later this year that will be projected onto physical surfaces with its augmented reality software.

Augmented reality, virtual reality ... or just reality?
To researchers like Ambinder and Lopes, biofeedback is an essential ingredient for enhancing gameplay. But that's not to say it's the only ingredient. As the excitement for early stage prototypes like the virtual-reality headset Oculus Rift show, games are still evolving visually as well.

And while virtual reality is particularly alluring for all the "Matrix" imagery it conjures, it's not the only way to mess with reality.

Just take Dekko ? a startup that recently raised $3.2 million in venture capital funding. It's releasing what founder and chief executive Matt Miesnieks likes to call a "real-world operating system."

"Everybody has some sort of imagination," Miesnieks told NBC News. "We would love to bring that to life. For instance, if you're a child, you might think, 'Wouldn't it be great if my Mickey Mouse doll could get up and start talking to me?'"

For its first in-house app, to be released later this year, Miesnieks said that Dekko is developing a tabletop boardgame that can be played entirely with computer-generated images.

Future Gaming Consoles

Pedro Lopes

In the video games of the future, the human body may be the most powerful console of all.

"If you wanted to believably immerse the player in the real world, the object had to feel like the real world," Miesnieks said. He thinks that his company can finally give people "the moon" that "we were promised" ? instead of "cardboard spaceships."

We're not in "The Matrix" ... yet
While total immersion is something game companies continually promise, is it something we even want? Football fans may relish the opportunity to stand in RGIII's shoes when playing "Madden NFL," but they probably don't want to feel his pain when a 350-pound lineman barrels into him.

Speaking at Kill Screen's recent gaming conference twofivesix, Palmer Luckey, the creator of the Oculus Rift headset, said that a big part of his job right now is "managing expectations" between the enthusiasts who expect "The Matrix" and the critics that see another Virtual Boy-style flop in the making.

Similarly, Lopes said that "we're obviously very far" from seeing anything like his electrodes pop up on Amazon, or even Kickstarter.

"The research we do is very vision-driven; these are not things that you'll have in your home next year," he said. "Maybe they will impact technology in 10 years."

Oculus Rift

Oculus VR

Invented by twenty year old tinkerer and gearhead Palmer Luckey, the Oculus Rift is being heralded as the first device that will succeed in making virtual reality a tangible possibility for game developers.

While the software required for any AR system is certainly sophisticated, Miesnieks insisted that the real failure isn't that it simply doesn't exist. "The problem is that it's ugly and expensive," he said. But "Google seems to address that, which is really exciting."

Google Glass ? the head-worn, video-capturing computer system ? is certainly a beacon of hope for this kind of gaming gear, just as "life bands" like the Jawbone UP are for any developer hoping to make biofeedback sound like something other than pure geekiness.

But Evan Selinger, a professor of philosophy at the Rochester Institute of Technology, noted that there's something that may make these new kinds of gaming systems a reality sooner than expected: advertising.

A researcher may not care about collecting reams of data on a person's physiological or emotional state. But how enticing does that prospect sound to a company like Sony or Microsoft that is trying to ramp up e-commerce for its always-connected retail system?

"What marketers don't want you to think about is that now is it's all about marketing," Selinger said.
