RIM to cut 5,000 jobs, delay new phones

TORONTO (AP) -- Struggling BlackBerry maker Research In Motion Ltd. revealed Thursday that its business is crumbling faster than thought.

The Canadian company posted worse results for its latest quarter than analysts had expected. It's cutting 5,000 jobs and delaying the launch of its new phone operating system, BlackBerry 10, until after the holiday shopping season.

After several delays, the first phone with BlackBerry 10 was expected later this year. It will be delayed even longer, to the first quarter of next year, RIM CEO Thorsten Heins said.

The delay comes as North Americans are abandoning BlackBerrys for iPhones and Android phones. Analysts have long said the new BlackBerrys will come out too late to reverse RIM's fortunes. RIM was pinning its hope on the new BlackBerry 10 system, which is meant to offer the multimedia, Internet browsing and apps experience that customers now demand.

Now it will come out months after a new iPhone is expected to be released. Current and previous iPhones have made the BlackBerry look ancient.

The jobs cuts are part of a previously announced initiative to cut $1 billion in annual costs this year. They represent about 30 percent of RIM's workforce, which is currently at 16,500.

"It is necessary to change the scale and refocus the company," Heins said on a conference call with analysts.

"I fully understand the impact a workforce reduction of this size has on our employees and the communities in which we operate. I assure you that we wouldn't move forward with a change of this size if we didn't think it was critical for our future."

RIM shares plunged $1.38, or 15 percent, to $7.75 in extended trading, after the release of the results. If they hold that level into regular trading Friday, they will set a new nine-year low.

Heins acknowledged that he delivered "a lot of tough news."

"This was a challenging quarter for the company on many fronts," he said. "And I am not satisfied with the financial performance we are reporting today."

Heins had previously vowed to do everything he could to release BlackBerry 10 this year but he said Thursday that the timetable simply wasn't realistic. He said RIM's top priority remains a successful launch of the new BlackBerrys.

"I will not deliver a product to the market that is not ready to meet the needs of our customers," he said. "There will be no compromise on this issue."

He said the company will release fewer models than in the past. He also said RIM will launch a BlackBerry 10 model with a physical keyboard close to the launch of the touch-screen model. RIM earlier said it would come out with a touch-screen model first, but it didn't say when it would make one with a physical keyboard, a feature that many people stay with BlackBerrys for.

RIM previously said it hired a team of bankers to help it weigh its options as it loses market share and its business erodes. Heins said they continue to study those options, but he declined to share those options and said the board would have to approve any changes.

RIM lost $518 million, or 99 cents a share, in its fiscal first quarter, which ended June 2. This compares with a profit of $695 million, or $1.33 per share, a year ago.

Excluding impairment charges, the latest loss was 37 cents per share. Analysts polled by FactSet were expecting a loss of 3 cents.

Revenue fell 43 percent to $2.8 billion, well below analyst expectations at $3.1 billion.

RIM said it shipped just 7.8 million BlackBerry smartphones in the quarter, down 41 percent from 13.2 million a year earlier.

Heins said the company is expecting the next several quarters to be "very challenging." He said RIM is in the midst of a platform transition and faces an increasingly competitive environment. Research firm IDC says BlackBerrys U.S. market share has plummeted from 41.1 percent in 2007 to 3.6 percent in first three months of 2012.

Colin Gillis, an analyst with BGC Financial, said the results and news of a BlackBerry 10 delay is far worse than the horrible news he had already expected.

"When a technology gets old, it's not a slow fade. It's a sharp cliff," Gillis said.

"There is very little market for old technology."

Michael Walkley, an analyst with Canaccord, called the BlackBerry 10 delay dire and problematic in a rapidly changing technology sector.

"The biggest disappointment is the delay of the BlackBerry 10," he said. "It's extremely challenging for them to turn around the business when their new smartphone is launching that late."

As someone who spent 7 years prior to my comics life working in a newsroom, today's page brings a smile to my face.

The internet has given everyone a voice and a platform to share that voice, which is a beautiful thing. But the opportunity to use that voice without proper diligence is rampant. I'm not saying that people aren't entitled to their opinions, but I am of the belief that opinions aren't necessarily journalism, and good journalism isn't without opinion. It's learning to understand the difference that makes for great reporters, columnists, and anchors. It takes talent, hard work and the ability to listen to what's happening around you.

Edward R. Murrow. Barbara Walters. Lloyd Robertson. These are journalists. They have reported on and witnessed moments that have changed the world. They have had their share of stories that didn't of course, but they know how to get to the humanity of a story and how to report it accurately, compassionately and with integrity.

Having a blog you update twice a month and using it to get free passes to Comicon is not the same thing.

Air Force Reserve wants an app for basic training

Military recruits have marched off to boot camp with nothing more than their families' well-wishes in the past, but today's warriors could get a little help from their smartphones. The U.S. Air Force Reserve has drawn up a wish list for a smartphone app that can help recruits adjust to basic training and military life.

The dream app combines nutrition and exercise features that even civilian smartphone owners might envy. One app feature would count calories based on photos of food taken by the phone. Another would map a recruit's runs based on their smartphone GPS. A third feature would even provide a digital assistant similar to the Apple iPhone's Siri that can talk fitness encouragement to trainees.

But the app ideas list also has plenty of military-centric features based on learning military law, chain of command or individual responsibilities as an Air Force Reserve member. Even suggested games have themes, including "Name the Military Tune" or "Weapons Familiarization" for the U.S. military's standard-issue M-16 assault rifle ? not to mention games for learning rank, chain of command, military law, and Air Force history.

Such games would combine with possible social networking features that include basic profile information (including gender, base of assignment and ship date) and help bring people together for carpooling or to cooperate in fitness challenges. The Air Force Reserve envisions the app allowing up to 4,000 users at a time accessing the Internet through smartphone, netbook, tablet or computer.

The Air Force Reserve put out the call for interested smartphone app-makers in a "request for information" notice on June 13 with an original deadline of June 26 for any interested app-makers. But it has already extended the contact due date to July 6 because of "significant interest and questions."

New Sony president gets shareholder approval

TOKYO (AP) ? Kazuo Hirai, the former head of Sony's game division, won shareholder approval Wednesday to steer a turnaround at the struggling Japanese electronics giant as its new president and chief executive.

But frustrated investors at the company's annual meeting in Tokyo grilled him and other board members, demanding to know how the company's past glory was going to be revived.

One shareholder got up without being picked to speak, and began shouting. Another shareholder asked why Howard Stringer, whom Hirai replaced, was staying on as chairman when Sony's performance had been so dismal under his seven-year tenure. Reporters were able to watch the proceedings on a monitor.

Tokyo-based Sony, once an icon of Japan Inc. with its portable Walkman music player, reported its worst loss in its 66-year corporate history for the business year ended March. Its profitability was battered by the tsunami disaster in 2011, flooding in Thailand, the global economic slowdown and a soaring yen.

The plunging prices of gadgets have also hurt Sony. Its annual loss last fiscal year of 457 billion yen ($5.7 billion) was its fourth straight year of red ink.

More critically, it has stumbled in the face of powerful rivals such as Samsung Electronics Co. of South Korea, which dominates the global TV business, and Apple Inc. with its iPhone and iPad offerings. Apple's devices have been bigger hits than Sony products even in the Japanese market. Sony has lost money for eight straight years in its mainstay TV business.

"We take the problem Sony's electronics business is facing very seriously, and we feel a sense of crisis," Hirai told shareholders.

Hirai's appointment as president and chief executive, replacing Welsh-born Stringer, the first foreigner to head Sony, was announced in April, and up for vote at the meeting. Despite some critical questions, the proposal passed at the end of the 90-minute meeting.

Sony is forecasting a return to profit for the business year through March 2013. Its troubles were worsened by factory and supplier damage in northeastern Japan, which was ravaged by the earthquake and tsunami last year. Sony also suffered production disruptions from the flooding in Thailand.

Hirai has already said the company will cut 10,000 jobs, or about 6 percent of its global workforce, and turn a profit in TVs in the next two years. The job cuts come on top of a couple of rounds of layoffs under Stringer.

Sony shares have lost about half their value over the past year to trade recently at about 1,000 yen ($12).

Turkey is to demand backing from its NATO allies on Tuesday at a special meeting called after Syrian troops shot down a Turkish warplane last week in an incident Damascus said was self-defence but which Ankara branded an "act of aggression".

It is only the second time in NATO's 63-year history that it has convened under Article 4 of its charter which provides for consultations when a member state feels its territorial integrity, political independence or security is under threat.

Turkey rejected assertions from Damascus that its forces had no option but to fire on the F-4 jet as it flew over Syrian waters close to the coast on Friday.
In a letter to the U.N. Security Council, Turkey condemned the "hostile act by the Syrian authorities against Turkey's national security", saying it posed "a serious threat to peace and security in the region".

Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc told a news conference Syria's actions "would not go unpunished".

The incident has further heightened tensions between Turkey and Syria already strained to near breaking point over the 16-month uprising against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's rule.

Though not known for his restraint, Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan has so far been measured in his response, perhaps due to Western reluctance to commit to any military action and wary himself of anything that could trigger a regional sectarian war.

European Union foreign ministers called on Monday for Turkey to show restraint, saying they would increase pressure on Assad.

"Military intervention in Syria is out of the question," said Dutch Foreign Minister Uri Rosenthal.

After a seven-hour Turkish cabinet meeting in which an air force chief gave a detailed briefing on Friday's incident, Arinc said Erdogan would make an announcement on Syria on Tuesday.

Syria's description of the event as an act of self defence, though tempered with commitment to a "neighbourly relationship", seemed likely to further anger Ankara.

Act of Defence?

"The plane disappeared and then reappeared in Syrian airspace, flying at 100 metres altitude and about 1-2kms (0.6-1.2 miles) from the Syrian coast," Syrian Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi told a Damascus news conference.

"We had to react immediately, even if the plane was Syrian we would have shot it down," he said. "The Syrian response was an act of defence of our sovereignty carried out by anti-aircraft machinegun which has a maximum range of 2.5 km."

Syria warned Turkey and NATO against retaliating.

"NATO is supposed to be there to strengthen countries," said Makdissi. "If their meeting is for hostile reasons (they should know that) Syrian land and waters are sacred."

Nobody puts the British One Direction in a corner! The boy band's boss, Simon Cowell, is countersuing the American band that filed a suit against the chart-topping Brits back in April.

According to E! News, Cowell is firing back at the U.S. band who sued his band, alleging that they have "continuously and consistently been utilizing the ONE DIRECTION Mark since ODUK made its public debut on the popular British television program 'The X Factor' in the fall of 2010." The U.S. 1D cites that they formed and named themselves One Direction back in 2009, 12 months before the boy band made their debut on the singing competition show. Cowell filed his countersuit on Thursday.

The American band adds they had already filed a trademark for the name when the U.K. band began making the rounds. They have sued Cowell and his label, SyCo, for $1 million in damages. Cowell's team fired back: "[U.S. One Direction] is guilty of fraud, oppression or malice, and by reason thereof, [U.K. One Direction] are, in addition to their actual damages, entitled to recover punitive damages." Their suit furthers that the U.K. 1D has found "unprecedented success and fame in the United States" and "became the first U.K. musical act to have a debut album enter the U.S. Billboard chart at No.1."

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cowell and his team claim that the U.S. band knew about his band when they formed, noting that they should check their timeline again. "For example, reference was made to ODUK on Nov. 28, 2010, in postings on the 'OneDirectionUSA' Facebook page (established by Third Party Defendants after the creation of ODUK's own, highly popular Facebook page)," Cowell's suit notes.

The U.S. band's attorney, Peter Ross, spoke to THR, adding, "It looks like we got defendants' attention. This is the response we expected, given who we're up against. An effort is being made to intimidate these young men from California. Our clients believe in their case and will not be deterred."

Shortly after the first suit was filed against ODUK, fans began to weigh in with name suggestions for the floppy-haired fivesome. Such cheeky names as FU1 Direction and 5 UK White Boys made the final cut, per fans.

Give 3-D printing a try? Yoda says do it

At some point in the not-too-distant future, we?ll all use 3-D printers to make new tools, replacement body parts?and dinner. In the meantime, early adopters are already giving the technology a try with downloadable blueprints for characters such as Yoda, that wise Jedi master of "Star Wars" fame.

The time-lapse?demonstration is courtesy of?YouTube user BusyBotz, who uses a commercial MakerBot Replicator 3-D printer?which costs?about $1,750. The 3-D model for Yoda is available from Thingiverse, a MakerBot-powered website where users share their digital designs.

The website aims to get people to share designs to feed into their 3-D printers, spreading the adoption of the technology, which MakerBot hopes will be widespread so they can sell more printers.

BusyBotz?s demonstration with Yoda showcases the fine detail available when the printer is set to build in 0.1 mm -high layer increments ? that is, Yoda is built up one 0.1 mm layer at a time.?

All things built with the 3-D printers are built layer upon layer.?

"There is a significant increase in detail compared to printing the same model at 0.2 mm," BusyBotz notes. ?It takes longer, but in a print like this, it is worth it.?

So much for that! Just as quietly and quickly as Facebook had put "Find Friends Nearby" online on Sunday, the mobile service to instantly add new Facebook friends in your vicinity is no longer there. A visit to the mobile web page is blank, and a click on the "Find Friends Nearby" tab in the iOS app goes to an error page. When we first broke the news about Facebook's new feature yesterday, the prospect raised all sorts of questions about what Facebook might do in this space. The app lets users find other Facebook users near them, and then quickly add them to their network: the service looked very rudimentary, but the concept offers potential ideas for how Facebook could develop such a service going forward.

What to get the homeowner who has everything? Perhaps a robotic vacuum styled in the fashion of an RC toy will fit the bill. Here at a gdgt event in New York City we happened upon iRobot's Roomba 790, which comes with a touchscreen remote for manually controlling where the bot goes. The controller -- make that the "Wireless Command Center" -- has an interface matching the one on the 790 itself, so there's no second set of menus to master here. In addition to deciding where it moves, you can also schedule daily cleanings or tap a "Clean" button to push the robot into action.Though this isn't the first time iRobot's dabbled in remote-controlled vacuum cleaners, previous models tended to rely on infrared sensors, meaning you could only control the Roomba if it was in your line of sight. This guy, though, uses a proprietary technology that allows you to program that 4pm scrubbing from up to 25 meters away.

As for battery life, it runs on four AA cells, and is rated for three to six months of runtime, depending on how compulsively you plan on cleaning. Interestingly, despite the change in wireless standards, the 790 is compatible with older 700-series Roombas, though it's not as is the controller would be sold separately. If you happen to be the kind of fabulously wealthy family who can afford (and has a need) for multiple Roomba cleaners, you can only pair the remote with one robot at a time anyway. Health boards are not providing enough information about their spending to allow Holyrood to scrutinise whether they are providing value for money, a committee has warned.

The Scottish Parliament?s Health Committee said there was a lack of clarity surrounding how Scotland?s 14 boards spend their share of the ?11 billion NHS budget.

Convenor Duncan McNeil said: ?Health rightly receives one of the biggest allocations of the Scottish Government?s budget. The role of the Scottish Parliament is to provide scrutiny to ensure that public money is spent wisely.?

He continued: ?Whilst our 14 health boards now provide MSPs with some information on how they spend their budgets, the issue we now face is the quality and clarity of that information.

?As a result, the committee has been unable to answer fundamental questions about how NHS boards spend their budgets ? questions that relate to the quality, efficiency and planning of NHS services.?

The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) said the call to improve clarity is ?entirely justified?, and wants to see ?proper scrutiny? of how money is spent.

Theresa Fyffe, director of RCN Scotland said: ?Everybody who cares about our NHS needs to engage in a proper debate on how the budget available can be spent on services fit for the future and this is only possible if we know what money is currently being spent on and what plans health boards have for the future.?

Dr Fyffe said the public could only support NHS decisions if they are presented with a ?clear picture of the pressures that the health service is under and the choices it faces?.

In a report published on Monday, the committee said NHS savings were important but the quality and consistency of services must be maintained.

It has set out plans to further scrutinise whether this is being achieved by boards and will also assess the balance between additional funding for boards and cost pressures on the whole healthcare system. The committee welcomed assurances from Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon that further information on boards? spending would be forthcoming.

South Africa police accused in murders

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? Eighteen South African police officers have been arrested on charges of murder, assault and possession of ammunition, an official said.

A spokesman for prosecutors, Mthunzi Mhaga, said that during a court appearance on Friday in the eastern port city of Durban, the officers were freed on 5,000 rand (less than $600) bail each.

The arrests earlier this week followed an investigation that began in January 2012 after allegations of a police "death squad" operating in the Durban area appeared in the Sunday Times, a Johannesburg newspaper.

In 2011, the newspaper alleged that the unit had committed "scores of assassinations, some in retaliation for suspected cop killing and others related to ongoing taxi wars."

Using witness testimony, death scene photographs and expert ballistic reports, the newspaper linked the unit the police officers worked for to many suspicious deaths.

Police spokesman McIntosh Polela said police officers of various ranks were arrested, and that authorities seized counterfeit cash, ammunition and crime scene photos during the arrests.

The accused officers are to report weekly to their nearest police station. They are due back in court Aug. 23.

Polela says that more arrests are likely.

South Africa has a high rate of violent crime and some citizens, in calls to radio talk shows and letters to newspaper editors, have praised members of the alleged death squad for cracking down on criminals.

The Wellcome Image Awards celebrate the way photography and micrography can show unexpected biomedical structures and patterns. The winning images will be on display at the Wellcome Collection in London from 21 June. Caroline Morley

This was the overall winner. It shows the surface of the brain of a person with epilepsy. The image was taken before an intracranial electrode recording procedure, in which a flexible electrode grid was attached to the brain's surface. The patient was then taken to the telemetry ward, where their brain activity was recorded. The surgeon used the recordings to identify the specific areas of the brain to be removed in a subsequent operation. This patient made a full recovery and no longer suffers from seizures.

Hospital Response and Recovery During Disasters: Extending ...

Avalution?s March 2012 hospital perspective (Hospital Preparedness: The Intersection of HICS, Business Continuity and IT Disaster Recovery) discussed how hospitals can integrate siloed preparedness activities into a single, unified preparedness program.? Since the article?s publication, Avalution received a number of questions regarding how those involved in preparedness (emergency management, business continuity, and IT disaster recovery) should interact during a response and recovery effort, and who is responsible for responding to each type of event.? This article aims to answer these questions.

Background
In most hospitals, the emergency management program (utilizing the hospital incident command system, or HICS) focuses heavily on responding to disaster situations caused by an external disruption (e.g. addressing a surge in medical care brought on by an event affecting the community).? In other words, most emergency management programs view their role as a responder to external events, rather than as a potential victim of events.? Some HICS-oriented emergency management programs also focus on where to redirect patients if the hospital?s physical environment is affected.

However, HICS can do so much more, and Avalution is seeing hospitals with more advanced preparedness programs using HICS processes to manage business continuity and IT disaster recovery-related efforts.? As such, we believe that the integration discussed in our Hospital Preparedness article can (and should) extend into any type of hospital response and recovery effort.

Extending HICS? Scope of Involvement
As demonstrated by the 2011 Joplin, Missouri tornado, hospitals may be required to not only triage and surge operations due to an external event in the community, but they may also need to respond as a victim of an event affecting their internal environment.

As part of the emergency management planning process, the hazard vulnerability analysis (HVA) aims to identify the potential events that could lead to a disaster in the community (thus increasing demand for hospital services), as well as the events that could lead to an interruption to the hospital itself (thus affecting its ability to provide services).? The hazards identified by a HVA process could affect the hospital?s internal environment and lead to the following loss scenarios:

• Loss of facility
• Loss of technology (e.g. data center)
• Loss of people
• Loss of back office and support departments (e.g. payroll, patient finance, pharmacy)

A threat that affects the hospital?s resources is likely to affect the hospital?s ability to provide patient care, directly or indirectly.? And, if patient care is affected, it should trigger HICS activation as a method of expediting a return to normal.

Leveraging the HICS Structure
In the HICS structure, the Incident Commander has the following direct reports: Operations, Planning, Logistics, and Finance/Administration Section Chief (similar to the National incident Management System, or NIMS, reporting structure).? Under the Operations Section, a Business Continuity Branch Director has an IT Unit direct report, as depicted below:

This structure demonstrates the HICS-defined relationship between operations (hospital/clinical), business continuity and IT.? Thus, it assumes that business continuity and IT should be involved in emergency management-related events, and Avalution believes the opposite is also true:? emergency response can (and should) be involved in business continuity and IT-related events.? But, how?? The following case study demonstrates one hospital?s response to an event affecting the healthcare delivery-related processes and its local data center.

Case Study
On a summer Sunday evening around 9PM, a fire severely damaged the west building of Hospital X?s main campus (where a number of patient care units and support departments are located, as well as one of the primary data centers).? What did Hospital X do?

First, Hospital X had a long established, well-rehearsed evacuation plan that led to the successful evacuation of employees and patients located in the west building.? Employees and patients were accounted for, and the HICS team gathered in the parking lot to discuss next steps.? The HICS team decided to activate the emergency operations center, and the incident commander instructed the team to relocate patients to the alternate site since the other patient buildings? census was high due to trauma season.

The public information officer began drafting messages for the media and shareholders, recorded a message on the hospital?s crisis hotline for employees, and contacted the county?s office of emergency management to notify them of the event.

Two hours later, the fire department allowed select members of the hospital?s damage unit to survey the site, although they could not enter the building due to structural damage.? The damage unit reported that the building would likely be inaccessible for ?weeks?, so the operations section chief and the business continuity branch director instructed the business function relocation unit to relocate support departments to their pre-defined alternate sites.? Further, the business continuity branch director directed department owners to implement their IT downtime procedures, and instructed the IT unit to failover to their alternate site.? In addition, IT unit rerouted telecommunications to the back up call center.

EPIC, RIS and LIS recovered within two hours at the failover data center, with other critical patient care systems coming up shortly thereafter.? Supplier deliveries were postponed or rerouted based on pre-established protocols.

For many weeks after the fire, building restoration activities continued, with Hospital X carefully coordinating with local government agencies.? Most back office and support departments recovered at alternate locations or from employees? homes, albeit in a minimum capacity.? After one week, all business critical systems were restored in the back up data center.? All in all, Hospital X?s patients felt very little disruption (aside from the relocation), and they also felt well communicated with.? Employees also felt well-treated.

This is an example of how a simple, well-established and well-rehearsed emergency management program can assist in meeting all stakeholder needs, even in a catastrophic situation.

Conclusion
Extending emergency management?s role in the response and recovery effort will ensure that the hospital is not only prepared to respond to a disaster affecting the community, but is also prepared to respond to and recover from a disaster affecting their internal environment and its resources.? In addition, using the same integration approach as used in the planning effort will ensure that all parties contribute to the response and recovery effort in order to maximize efficiency and lessen the impact to patient care.
